the best thing to do with iron is after electrolysis heat it up to drive off all the water completely, then while still hot seal with paraffin wax so it soaks in. There is also a product that I can not remember the name of made specifically for treating old iron as well that I am sure you could find with a google search.

Nice Save of the old iron. You could treat this iron with a product called Gemplers. It treats the iron from the inside out, stops the rusting process, and gives the iron a nice finished look. I treat some of my CW iron relics with this product and was very pleased with the results. If interested, there are some videos on Utube about the product Gemplers. Best of luck to you.

Possibly part of a lightning rod.
If we mean the same lightning rod (the one that protects objects from lightning :BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:), I don't think it's possible, because it was taken out from a depth of half a meter! The nearest building is several kilometers away, and there were no buildings in that location in recent history. At first glance I thought it was a sword guard, but it's too big! Thanks though... :laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

So I think we lost something in translation. I mentioned "old iron" which seems to translate to scrap metal in the Bosnian language. What I meant was old as in referring to its age and oxidation. I agree with your statement though, just because something is not gold or silver does not mean it is not treasure.

Intriguing piece. I like the shape. The iron appears to have been in clumps and hammer welded together. Looks very old. A keeper for sure. Someday I hope it is identified.

I feel like it could be just some experimental thing the blacksmith made or it’s a tool for the blacksmith shop

Since I've watched all the episodes of ''Forged in Fire'', I wish these pieces were from an old forge! But I still don't have an answer to what exactly is at stake! :sad10::sad10::sad10:

To me, it looks like the "tangs" on both ends originally faced the same direction. You can see separation in the fold where the one on the right has been bent. If that is the case, I believe it is a hand forged rope cleat.

Elsewhere I got information that this could be a crossbow bow! What do you think about that?

:icon_scratch: Can't see that the metal would be flexible enough for that application.
