Writing on Artifacts ?

If you would like to mark them(stone) just make a spot coated with clear nail polish then write on that. nail polish remover will take it all off. Better to mark a frame in my opinion.

I dont do it cause it takes away the look of the artifact. JMO though. I usually just keep them in different tubs as far as location found. Then I will write on the container instead of the artifacts.

I wouldn't do it !

I would not either. I've got a clay elbow bow pipe that was found near Columbus Georgia years ago and I bought it The person marked it with white out and then wrote on top of that. Any good ideas of how to get that off? I would consider taking a picture of the artifact with the desired information beside it and save that. I have seen someone use masking tape and wrote on that. I'm not too sure about how long that will last once the tape drys out.

"Goof off" Should remove the white out.

There's nothing wrong with writing on your relic for documentation and there are several ways to do it. As mentioned, one of the more popular methods is using clear nail polish.

But for pete's sake, if you DO it...make sure you write on the UGLY side of the point.

try pure acetone with a q-tip on the white out on the pipe first. If it works you can mop/soak it up with additional swabs

Never heard of that. But, I am interested in getting it gone. Any idea of how it will affect the pottery?

In the small amount it would take to remove the white out it should be fine. Its basically a solvent for adhesives. Toms Suggestion is a good one.

Don't blame you! ... white out.. geees.

Gator / Tom,
I am currently working on taking the white out off - Took a picture of "before" & perhaps post one tomorrow of "after"? If anyone is interested in seeing this pipe?

Calligraphy pen, black India ink and clear nail polish over it is best. And write as small as possible on the worst side (like the break, if broken). Many don't like to do it, but it's worth it. Simplest way is to just give it a number and keep a catalog/notebook (keeps down on the writing, after all you don't want to write a "book" on your piece!). You can list the site/location, date, and any other kind of notes. It's a good thing to do, because years down the road you'll still know when and where each piece was found. No one's going to be around forever, so it's nice to pass that info on to future generations (especially if you're lucky enough to have a kid that's just as interested as you are!).

Don't do that!! Goof off took the clear off of my car. I hope that was a joke Gator!!

No.. not really. The clear coat on your car.. is essentially a type of adhesive. I didn't think it would hurt clay. Try putting acetone on your car.. see what that does.

"white out... Geees" GOOF OFF!!!! We are talking about the stuff for over spray.... right? To each his own. However, GA, read the list of chemicals on the can. Personally, I couldn't bring myself to use it. Must be something out there less harsh.

Good luck GA. I'll check out your post tomorrow to see the pipe.
