DG, I wonder if the 2 people are Adam & Eve? I've seen the symbol before, but can't recall it's meaning right now. It does look like silver intaglio. With the location of the top of the piece, I think it was some type of bracelet or buckle with perhaps a leather strap band. Can you post a closer pic of the back? Super neat find  Breezie

Judging by the back, I don't think its silver. It might be plated. Since you can see it in person, and we can't, are there any symbols or pictures on the back, or just words? Breezie

Words around the edges ,very small like a coin ,and in the middle some letters ,its very heavy
No luck with the pencil trick ,its so faint ,just about gone

I think I found the symbol or at least the cousin. It's called a Witch's Knot.

Witch’s Knot – this is the most common symbol in folk magick. In the middle ages, witches used this as a charm to protect themselves against other witches who used their magic to harm others.

Yikes ,lol man and women ,holding the staff ,also they have something that looks like shield in each other hand

My next thought: Could it be a faux coin placed into a bezel?

Well the front side is not a coin ,the back inner circles looks like it could have been a coin ,this thing is weird lol

I like Breezie's Adam & Eve idea ... which leads me to suspect the symbolism in the center is related to the "Forbidden Fruit Tree" and/or the "Serpent."

SBB
Thanks for your input ,I am looking through images related to Adam and Eve

I'm finding lots of Adam & Eve imagery like the one below. But I haven't found a symbol yet that looks exactly like the swirly design at the top of the item in question. I'm thinking that swirly design might represent the serpent entwined around the tree of knowledge. :dontknow:

Way to go IronSpike on ID-ing the symbol. Since this is St. John's cross, I'm now wondering if the 2 people are Jesus and John the Baptist since one is holding a staff. It could be the Baptism. Very interesting, Breezie

It's a Saint John's cross:

Not much is known of the original Nordic meaning of the symbol (before christian meaning). Also referred to as a Saint Hans cross.
I dont know ancient coins but taking IronSpikes lead, it resembles Theotokos crowning St. John Vatatzes as King ... http://www.coinarchives.com/a/results.php?results=100&search=John+V

I think the ancient coin guys could help; Silver Searcher, Crusader
