Wow, What a Fake Out! Found this odd silver piece late last night by the light of my propointer...thought I had a Chinese Silver piece or something?

Turns out it's a Silver 8 Escudo Doubloon replica from Great American Coin Company

Sure was exciting, just like the costume jewelry finds I've had.

That must have been a heart stopper when it came out of the ground! If it is made out of silver then it still has 'real' value. Nice pictures.................63bkpkr

Thanks, 63bkpkr. Especially in the dark by flashlight!! As a last, "I'll just check the playground sand area real quick on my way out"...After all the foil and eraser ends it was a welcome find!

I remember years ago when I pulled this out of the ground and thought I was going to pass out. Turns out they've been making the same 1780 Maria Theresa dollars for more than 200 years....all with the same date!

I always wonder how stuff like that gets lost

STILL A NICE FIND! I'd of been SO EXCITED to see something like that come out of the ground! I'm sorry it was a let down in the end, but still a nice find!! I'd much rather find that than the Clown face token that was my first larger coin sized find, when I saw the clown face I couldn't help but think this isn't a good sign for my future finds if this is an omen. Luckily I'm not superstitious!

Doninbrewster, I'm sure that coin kept up the excitement level until you discovered it's dirty little secret! Are you able to get any specific info on your restrike?

Heart was racing up until I got this one in the light and thought " Spanish pressed coin on a tot lot...?" Then google confirmed in about 10 seconds where it was from...

I found a fake Spanish Cob too before I found a real (copper) one. I think it's pretty common to unearth things that don't turn out to be what we originally hoped it was. Sometimes it turns out the other way. I was up in Cape Cod last week and I dug a signal that at first sight looked like punch-out from a metal box. I was hot and tired and I was annoyed to see this "slug" in the dirt. I rubbed it a bit and then noticed it was actually a well worn silver coin--a SLQ (Standing Liberty Quarter) :) I would have prefered something a bit older based on the age of the house, but it sure was better than a "slug!"

@DonInBrewster: Why do suppose they have been making copies of that particular coin/date for so long? Was it at least silver?

At least I'm not the only one that made the mistake of thinking a Cob was Chinese. I felt like a buffoon after posting this [url]http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/345557-first-gold-2013-a.html
thinking it was Chinese. Turned out to be a 14k Replica of a Cob. My favorite piece of Gold to date none the less. In my area, you don't find anything that old.

I like your Replica.

Mariposa Gold

Here's my fake out a 1854 20$ gold, the back had allot of gold on it as that was the side I saw first. Then upon a closer look I saw the word "copy" :(

Nice finds All, Thanks for sharing! That 14K Cob pendant is awesome Mariposagold! I guess they don't call them replicas for nothing...

Got to love some of those nitro moments as they seem to rent space up there for awhile.
