I've been working an area where old pilings that haven't been uncovered for over 50 years, according to locals in the area, are now showing and have pulled out some old jewelry. It's possible the markings on the first one date to a company that made jewelry from 1896 until 1915. That one I cleaned.

Today's find has a large black stone in it. Would you clean it? I kind of like how it is the way it is :) The one with the black stone is 9.0 grams.

I let the experts answer on cleaning. I just wanted to give you a big Congratz on those rings!!!

Up to you, your not going to damage its value that much, but if it were me I would leave.

Nice finds!! If you have to ask, take it to a good jeweler. Most of all, what do YOU want to do with it? What are your tastes on displaying your finds? If you'd rather wear it, then get it restored. First thing would be to research more on it. The big concern is if restoring will take away value if it is a historic or rare item.

I like it as is but I am curious as to what kind of stone that is. I also wish it could be dated. Congrats on your finds!

wow nice find. Definatley looks old.I would soak it in warm water for few hrs.Other then that maybe take a soft tooth brush to see if there is any markings. But I wouldn't go to much further. If you can find markings and get a date on it be nice.I know if it was me i leave it alone I like the patina look....

Since it's not a matter of ruining value if you clean it (as it might well be with a Paul Revere silver spoon ) this one is a
matter of taste ! (In this case I probably would clean and polish - because silver can look so much better than that ! )

Congrads on the Sterling treasure!! Very interesting rings!

Me I would do a quick electrolysis, wipe off, then rub with baking soda. Most of my silver is so bad I will cook it for about one minute, wipe off, cook again for 30 seconds ..wipe off then rub with baking soda...your is so mild it may only take 15 seconds..

Beauty ring. I wouldn't touch that ever... It's perfectly perfect IMHO

Most here on t-net LOVE patina!

I would clean it, but not knowing what the stone is I would do it very gently. First try would be with a baking soda paste and a soft cloth. That might take enough tarnish off to give it a silver color and shine. If it didn't then I would use Tarnex and a bunch of q-tips to dab at the tarnish and then quickly wipe it away, being sure not to touch the stone. It is very tedious but it can get it all off.

I've never ran across anyone buying antique silver rings for over silver melt, so...whatever you would like to do with it will not hurt the value.
If someone disagrees with my assessment, please put me in touch with your buyer. Thanks!
Oh, BTW - Nice Find!!!

Me neither. Perfect the way it is.
I never thoroughly clean off my stuff unless it's real muddied up.
