Would this be a find ?

I have this opportunity to buy this pendant.
I think it looks like an Andalusite and what I have heard they are very, very rare, specially this size.

Of course it could be synthetic but it's set in 18K gold and well I'm not sure they make them synthetic.
The guy who's selling it says he doesn't know what stone it is.

According to http://www.gemval.com a 8 ct stone of Andalusite of this size and cut etc. would be worth USD 1735.71.
But it is much bigger than 8 ct, as 8ct was the biggest they could estimate.

This stone is 20 x 12 mm. That would make a CT of at least 10 - 12.
The whole pendant is 30 x 20 mm.

So I wonder if anyone know if it would be a nice buy and if you think I should buy it ?? (he wants about $100 for it)

You would think the seller had checked it out and put the right price on it. If it sounds to good to be true it more than likely is so.

Well, it depends on interest and some kind of knowledge also ...
In this case it's not a "person" who's selling it, it's a pawn shop in a very small Swedish city.
And in pawn shops the only value besides the gold is if it is diamonds, the rest is disregarded, at least here it is.

And I can understand that they don't know what it is.
I who have been buying stones and gold for over 20 years first ever heard of Andalusites just the other day,
as I got my first small one.

Anyway, I know how to make out if it is genuine now and if I buy it, I'll keep you updated?

I did buy it so I take more pictures when I get it.
It will take some week or so before I get it in my hand so to say

Ok, I got it home today and I still think it looks very genuine !

And it tends to get a little bit green, specially in the tip of the stone where it's thinner than in the middle and specially when you look at the backside.
It's hard to show the right color, it's has more orange sparkles than you see in the picture and also not quite as dark.

Any inputs ?

from the checkered pattern and the way the stone changes color from front to back, plus the green edges i would say that it is probably legit.

your second set of pics looks much nicer than the 1st. I agree from the cut it appears to be legit. the best way to find out is to go to a GIA, gemological institute of america, jewler. not hard to find, most jewlers have some dealing with GiA and see if you can find one that has taken the colored stone course. They could tell you for sure. again congrats in 8k you found a nice piece

The first picture wasn't mine, it was the picture in the auction add... the others was mine?
Hm, gemological institute of america, but I live in Sweden

and I doubt many jewelers have a lot to do with them.
How ever it doesn't matter, I'm convinced it genuine, it's looks exactly like the small one I have, also it is 18K (eighteen) , not 8K?

I have worn it ever day since I bought it and put it on a very heavy 109 grams 18K chain?

Actually I did, and it is a real Andalusite, I asked a newly found friend of mine,
he have been buying and selling stones for 40 years and he said it was the real deal.

But you are right that it sometimes can be very hard to distinct the different between
a Andalusite and a garnet and this expert said it has all to do with something plektorism,
that is the way the color change in the stone occurs.

If it has a distinct greenish yellowish brownish plektorism it is genuine.

I recently bought another smaller extremely rare Red African Andalusite 1,12ct
and with the naked eye you can't see the difference at all but under UV light,
something happens that make you see what is what !
The Andalusite turns green/yellowish and the garnet turns purplish.

The color is better and more red in RL, my bad web cam doesn't do them justice.

Yes but a smoky quartz doesn't have any color change at all to talk about.

Actually I've had it for a long time now, this is thread is over a year old.

No I don't know them, and I am ceraily not one of them. but I also live in sweden, and found their website, so i thought to give you the link.

Actually I think their quality is often questionable.

How ever I sometimes buy lots of smaller stones from them very cheap
on Traderas auctions. like these emeralds to put in brooches.

I would never buy a ruby from them, I did ones and came to regret it,
they photo shop the colors of their stones on the auctions.
