I find many examples of these split bone tools they fit the description of a gouge. I would just like someone's opinion on thier specific use. woodworking... probably.. but I'm curious as to their specific function. I have seen Celts small enough to do the size work that these would fit.

do both ends show use polish??
if so i think they are an expediant tool since they are not very finished looking....
..and yes...if that is so..i agree that they would be a gouge...i have found some of those also
if no use wear shows, then i think they are just bones that were broke so that the marrow could be utilized

Expedient I believe is correct. the 1 I have pictured by itself has a good amount of smoothing on the end the hand would be placed. the other do show some but I don't believe they were used for very long. there has been definitely taking down of the working end. And marks from use. I see a lot of split and broken bone at many sites. enough to know these were altered. Thanks for checking them out

Just wanted to mention the tribe that inhabited my area were the Ais They never became very advanced as a tribe. they kept to themselves never progressing into farming or many of the other things surrounding tribes did. they remained hunter gathers and held onto their archaic traditions. that maybe a part of the reason they are extinct as a people.

A little more like the deep jungles of borneo down here. no teepees or headdresses. They practiced human sacrifice even.

They could be quick made throw away tools, The one on the right look's like it could be something. Bone tools such as gouges will usually have polish one or both ends. The working end and the end that was held in the hand depending how long they kept and used the tool.

Right. ... Maybe I should post without photos. I was really looking for An opinion on Just what gouges were used for.

Gouges were used for several things but they were used a lot in scraping and finishing hides.

That makes good sense... I've heard a lot of people refer to them as woodworking tools. just didn't seem the right choice of material to me. Thank you
