After raining for days it finally stopped today. I managed to grab an hour before it got dark on a local ploughed field. This field's soil is very sandy and a pleasure to dig in. Found this large coin weight with a shield on the back from James 1 period 1603/25 on the front is XXX111. Followed 5 mins later by this hammered penny of one of the Edwards. Then guess what ?, yes it started to rain again, the rain got heavy so that was it. I will see what tomorrow brings. The pictures don't do credit to the weight and coin, I will take some better ones in the morning.

Good Hunting
Robert

Nice find Rob...looks like it could be a good field 8)

Diggings that I can only dream about.

Very nice finds there.
Your coppa looks good after all those years of beauty rest in the ground.
Congrats!
Rob

Looks like the weight is for a Rose Ryal worth 33 shillings in1612, a serious gold coin in those days.

If in doubt dig it out !

Been searching it for years now, for some reason it's come back to life finds wise this season. Could be because of the very wet summer we had, maybe the plough went a little deeper.

Robert.

You guys got all the History over on the otherside of the Pond. I would call those Smashing Finds ;D

Coin weights are always a pleasure to find & in better than average nick.

Shame you can't see the mint on the Penny but the obverse is nice & its not smashed up by the plough.

A excellent result for a short hunt. 8)

Robert.

Not sure if you noticed with your farmers but they often only rake the surface for 4-5 years & then they do a proper deep plough.

Done some slightly better pictures of the weight, still a little blurred though.

incredible finds i'd love to find 1 hammered coin kind of rare over here in the states congrats and hh

Wish we could find that stuff here in America! Not that much history here. I spent three lovely years in Germany and was told "NO METAL DETECTING HERE". Too many un-exploded ordnance in the ground.
