A friend of mine found this at the beach near Davenport, near Santa Cruz Ca. It even has a tiny working hatch with a hook to keep cage closed. Could it be for live bait in a real trap or crab pot. It's so tiny and homemade looking I can't make any sense of it. It makes me laugh just looking at it, so strange lol. I put a quarter in for scale it's about 5x2x2 and angled in places.

I think it's a "chum basket" possibly homemade, similar to the one below...

ah ha nice ID thank you! Do you think they put those inside the cage to draw the crab in? I thought they used more bait from watching tv shows lol.

Chum is used mostly for attracting fish, but one of could be used in a crab pot as well for containing the bait, most commercial crab pots have a cage/basket built into them for the bait, usually for crab you want the bait to be a whole piece/s of fish, chicken, etc. rather than like chum that is ground up and frozen when used in a chum basket.

Ah-ha, great ID :icon_thumleft:, I never used or seen one of these crab snares, maybe it's a west coast thing :dontknow: but I would rather set a crab pot, go fishing and come back later for a lot more crabs!!!

Wow I guess it is, the wires make sense now, they are like snares. It does still have a chum basket so AU was close. Thank you Ruchman.

There in just about every tackle shop on the west coast, with the design I'm not surprised people loose them all the time.:icon_scratch: see a lot of people using them though
