Hello I found this medal at a house sight in New Orleans. The louse was built around 1878. This was the best find. It shows an eagle on the top and says souvenir on it. The back is unmarked. I kow its a souvenir medal from a convention/worlds fair but I was hoping y'all could help me find out what convention it was from. They each seem to have a different top part. Thanks

The world's fair came to New Orleans in 1984. I went three times.

Dunno what that is from though. If it was a world's fair souvenir, it should say 1984 World's Fair somewhere on it. Just my guess. Maybe since it simply has a pelican on it, it might just be a souvenir from Louisiana. Dunno.

I tried looking up something similar and couldn't. However if I were to guess and it came from that time frame I would check out three possibilities. First is the Centennial Exposition which was held around 1876 in Philadelphia. I couldn't find anything similar from it, but with the theme it would make sense. The second is the 1888 Fair which was in Chicago. I don't think its really from there, but it is possible. The third one which i have a feeling is where it most likely is from is The Southern Exposition which was held in Louisville from 1883-1887 or around then. It obviously is closer then the others to New Orleans, but it just seems like it could be the best starting point.

I may not have helped at all and if I didn't I'm sorry. I just enjoy looking some of these things up sometimes and noticed nobody had chimed in yet so I thought I would. Good luck at finding out more information on it.

jupiterhill,
First, Welcome to TN?
Second, no need to feel 'sorry'.

I think it's going to be hard to give a 100% positive ID on the pin. It could be from a fair, a convention, a GAR encampment, on any number of events worthy of a souvenir. I will say that it most likely dates from around 1890 to 1915 or so when these were popular. Being the top piece, it probably held a ribbon with another metal piece hanging below. You might stand a chance at finding the rest of it at the same location.

It is also somewhat likely that a top portion like this was used for multiple different lower portions, as manufacturers would do as a cost saving measure. Thus knowing what the bottom portion was for certain may not be possible. But I'll look around...

What's making you look in the direction of Worlds Fair or Convention? It's interesting.
