Metal Detecting
Found this in the woods behind the power company offices along with other household refuse. Doesn't appear to be very old. It's a man's leather work glove with a flat metal plate integrated into the palm. There were four metal "fingers" (only one remains) attached that would have extended into the glove to about the first joint of each finger.

The palm is completely worn through but the metal plate is not dented. The fingers don't show much wear.

Any thoughts on it's purpose? :icon_scratch:

To me it would make more sense to have the metal plate on the backside of the glove.Inside the palm would make it hard to pick up tools ect.if the plate were on the backside I would say it was used to protect the small bones and tendons.

Maybe a home made or precursor to a butchers glove/gauntlet?

I don't think it was homemade. The metal (two plates screwed together) appears to have been integrated into the lining of the glove. It is still attached to the leather.

I agree that you could not pick up or use any tools with this glove on. I fit it onto my hand and could just barely bend my fingers a little bit around the extensions. So my assumption is that it was NOT used for gripping anything.

Maybe it was used for some sort of mason work, the plate could protect the hand from the corners of the heavy cinder blocks always pressing on the same spot when you pick them up

A metal palmed wanker spanker? And it is worn out... Hmmm... I'm trying to picture... no, never mind...

I fear this thread will be deleted pretty soon (deservedly so).

Any other bright ideas?

I was a lineman for a bit, and we use gloves like this to string metal support cables for antannaes, poles, etc. so we would not get little metal barbs in our hands. I think this is what you have here, and being behind a power company makes sense. They would be used to attach the metal wires holding up the large power poles. I will try to find a pic.

Grounded glove? Plate would attach to a wire so that whatever you are working with grounds to the plate and through the wire, rather than through your body?

I dunno. I wouldnt want to work around electric with a metal glove.

:tongue3: VIRGINIA? Maybe an early OYSTER SHUCKER'S GLOVE? That shucking knife can cause havoc when run into your palm through a glove. Been there, done that and didn't like the results. Just a thought. Modern chainmail gloves are real skin savers. :icon_scratch:
Where's my Grog? :coffee2:

I had the same thought. But I don't think you could close your hand enough to hold an oyster. Also, the leather on the palm is clearly "worn out", so I think it was used for something more physically demanding than oyster shucking.
