Looks more like a form/mould for something. Wooden hammer would likely show more use from impact, but maybe

Kinda thought that,but didnt see the shape of this on any I looked at,but then again there was numerous shapes and designs...thank you!,and I have seen some chisel work being in New England and have worked on some old homes,precision work and a art for sure.

The handle doesn't appear to be the origina. It might be a crude kitchen masher and not a mallet.

Greetings HappyCamper. What you have there is a very cool piece. It is not anything suggested above, but rather an old harness makers mallet. I, too, believe that the handle has been replace, but none the less it is a wonderful old makers mallet.

It does resemble and leather work mallet. The ones I have used are rolled rawhide. They don’t pack as big of bang as this piece looks like it could. That is why I like the chisel mallet idea.

It is not a leather working mallet nor a chisel mallet. This type of mallet is unique to harness making. although there is some overlap with saddle making,
