That's pretty cool. The ridge below the dragon head...have you tried pulling the stick apart? Maybe some kind of sword or something. I know I'm probably way off, but it may be more than a stick...

Interesting item. The ball in the mouth reminds me of something my dad carved about 60 years ago. He started with a block of wood and when done it was a cage w/corner bars and a ball that moved around but stayed inside.
You definitely have something neat-Best of luck finding out more.

Reminds me of carvings and items I've seen in other countries. The Philippines, Japan, South America. Is the stick a walking stick, per chance? The statue of the dog/dragon/whatever and the like are used for sit-arounds, remembrances, decorations. When military people go and live in other countries, a lot of the time they will bring these types of items back as keepsakes, or send them home to the relatives. May be made of teakwood or something similar. -Noodle

A retired military officer has written me saying that its possibly a " swagger stick" used by military officers.? I told him he might have to demonstrate to me how one would swagger.? I did look the word up and ladies, its basically a stick that military men carry to show off authority and power? ;D? So I'm not taking anymore grief about my purses.

I"m hoping that he can also gather some information on the signature, identifiying the language would be helpful and at least I'll know what country its from.? I read that the Chinese and Japanese both argue the dragon orginated in "their" country.? You can tell the difference in between them by counting their toes.? My poor dragon stick doesn't have any toes.?

And thanks to Noodles suggestion I'll try to find someone that could tell me what type of wood its carved from.

I did test your suggestion also Beepgoeson, but it didn't pull apart.? :(? .... at least a swaggering purse opens up and there's other neat stuff inside. LOL

In the picture the eyes look like red stones? or are they plastic?

my father brought something very similar home from Vietnam, he told me it was a "short stick"? I believe. It was given to him when his time left there was short.

I don't know what they're called, but it looks to me like one of those hair sticks that oriental ladies would put in their hair. You know, like a geisha with her hair up? Whatever it is, I like it. very cool.

Still investigating, could be a swagger stick or a short stick, definately not a oriential hair do stick because of its size. But I'd love to have a minature one for hair, it is pretty unique.

Wild shot:

The latin letter O with the two dots on top is used in the swedish language.

Item might not even be asian. But more than likely the name of the owner.

Some Japanese dragons were depicted with a ball in their mouth.

Checked Yahoo. "dragons with ball in mouth"
