This thing is driving me crazy. Obviously it's not something I dug up but I hope you'll help me figure out what this thing is. :BangHead:

Main part is 4-sided. Each side says "CINCO CIGARS"; three of the sides have the number 1, 2, or 3 after "CIGARS". The little wooden rod slides out easily and is notched on the end.

Opposite of the side where the rod comes out is a hole. It has a little wooden plug set inside about a quarter of an inch. (I took the plug out to be sure it wasn't some kind of slide whistle -- it's not. I put the plug back in.)

If it's some kind of tool or toy I cannot tell. Any ideas?

you would
insert a tube "pre rolled outer hull of a cigar or cigarette" insert cut tobacco and pack with the rod then push it out

It is some type of trinket/magic trick. cant remember for sure how it works but have seen it before. there is supposed to be a plug in the end which holds a loop of rubber band in the inside. you slide the rod in and act like you hook the rubber bland on the little notch in the rod but really squeeze the tapered end between your thumb and finger and 'Squirt" it into the square block. then you hand it to the other person and of course they can't get it hooked. Hope this makes sense.

I think that must be it. Thanks much!

Dead on correct! The plug held two pieces of rubber band. You acted like you were hooking the rubber band. When you pinched the end it would appear to snap back in. Similar was one of the projects we taught in The Boys Club wood shop. Yup! Dated myself! Those were the days before everyone decided tools were too unsafe for kids.

Come to think of it, I think there's one who probably still hasn't figured it out. Hmm, should give him a call to see!:tongue3:

So I guess my antique version is just missing the rubber band. It has a little wooden plug in the end where the band comes out. Unsure if I can get it back to working order. Also don't get how it's supposed to work for the "magician" but won't work for a layman/civilian.

Anyhow, thanks for all the input!

My Grandpa used to whittle those out and give them to kids.

There is a "trick" to get them to work and only the initiated know how to achieve it. I won't disclose the secret. ;-) Although Boogeyman did and you can see it in the drawing with the plastic version.

Life was simpler when we were kids.
