Mid 1800's. But, here's what I see. The hole shows wear, I think it was used a lot in it's day. The steel bands are hand forged, and uneven, and show appropriate age if it had been laying in the corner of a barn for 150 years. I don't believe it was ever buried. Some of those tension inserts are newer I think. A partial restore or repair, but I think it's mostly authentic. Very cool. Of course, that rawhide cord is new.

Thanks for the replies. I think it is missing a strap holder. There should be three if I figure right. If it isn't old whoever made it dd a very good job of making it look that way. It's hard to see but there is the letter J and a couple other marks that I can't decipher. It also looks like the it has been sectioned into qiuarters with the J being in one and the other symbols in another.

fyfrffytr1 and diggummup - one of the most knowledgable people I know regarding CW artifacts is Don Troiano. I think he's on the forum now and then. I had the blade to a "sword" that I dug up here in CT, convinced it was a Revolutionary War era artifact and was ready to frame it and display it until Don examined it and assured me it was some "half-adzed" relatively modern farming implement. Maybe I can still hang it (unless my wife puts it where she has threatened to put some of my other finds... you can guess where).
