I acquired three wood spools with brass tips, two of the three are larger than the first. These were in a cobblers kit and have no idea what they are. Anybody have any clues??

They are tool handles. Some had handles with removable bottoms to store extra accessories. Some even had little 'chucks' to grip the bits. These look to be awls.

There are no holes in it what so ever and the brass has been punched into the wood not allowing it to come off. The wood on the inside of the brass tip is not indented. I did have a thought, that maybe they are used to push a needle through the leather of a shoe since it came from a cobbler tool kit.

Interesting! My first thought was a sewing awl as well, but after reading that there are no holes in them, I wonder if they could be leather punches or something. Does it look as if they have been hammered lightly on the ends? Maybe they could have been used to set button hole rivets for laces? Just random thoughts -- I don't know.

My vote is "new" awl handles. They were sold without predrilled holes so the user could insert any kind, shape or size of awl (or other tool) into the handle. Just a guess!
