Spent just over 3 hours on my own digging 85 shotgun cartridges :P But it was well worth it.

4 Roman Coins - 1 nice one.
Lead Weight (probably Roman)
Chewed piece of lead

My first Roman Bronze Bird Pendant :icon_thumright: Might even be Celtic (Iron Age) :o

Its a city comm. of Constantinoplis - Constantinople AD330s Quite a common one for us - TRP. - Trier Germany

PS. A right pain, but I have got the sound sussed. But want to clear them as the odd one was a coin, & had coins from the same hole.

Yeah, this wood might throw up something really nice, but I'm more than happy so far.

That pendant is pretty damn sweet!

Got lucky really, it was right at the end of the hunt. However, it does prove the scatter continues into the wood although its far more spead out :)

As shaun says "even your woods are good" :icon_thumleft:.
The pendent is sweet . I don't even know if I've got a field to detect on until tomorrow, although there are some coming up over the next few weeks including the thrymsa field.

Well only this one, never had any success anywhere else.

I was even thinking of doing the beach, a friends wife went down there after a storm and picked up 2 viccy sixpences, 1 viccy thrupence, a pastry jigger and a load of old coppers just using eyes. The other attractive aspect of this beach is it is next to a Viking encampment site.

:o Looks like the woods gave you the bird. Hehehe. Seems like you've found a great alternative to the fields, when they are planted. I do like that relic. Can't beat finds like that, unless you get a crock of coins!

Nice finds Crusader. Looks like you got a nice spot to hunt. Wonder if that bird pendant was jewelry only or mabe it also had a use like a lamp or candle snuffer. Ever heard anything like that? :dontknow:

Just jewelry however if it's Celtic, they often were believe to hold special supernatural powers or symbolise a deeper meaning.

Above is an interpretation of what animal's meant to the Iron Age people. Problem is they wrote nothing down, so the only accounts we have were from the Roman enemy.

Welcome to Tnet :hello:

Re the pendant, the style says Roman but the metal says earlier. Unless documented somewhere else this is going to be a hard one to nail down to an exact period. Most cast Celtic animal figures were votive, but this has a hole so as to be worn as a pendant, although this does not preclude the votive aspect. This is truly why I love detecting, the puzzles and enigmas really get the grey matter working. I hope you get an answer somewhere on this Cru because I am fascinated .

I skimmed a couple of books, & I think in Nigel Mill's it had a similar bird with the same shape tail, & line decoration - its was Celtic but was a small mount. So for the time being we have plotted it as Celtic/Roman. Haven't found a Roman match for it yet, which is encouraging as they pretty much mass produced everything.
Also if you look at the hole its off centre which is unlike the Romans, maybe even added later & it was Votive. I'm leaning Celtic.

It must be amazing unearthing EARLY history in the UK.
