I believe it is a cypress knee. In swampy areas cypress roots will have growths that will grow up. They are called knees. Tony

Bald Cypress knee yep...very light...rot and termite resistant.

Dang, I'm late replying to this...missed a good chance answering. Yep, it's a cypress knee....look what you can make out of them, I've seen other holiday characters + lamps too.

My wife collects Santas. Ther weirder the better and she would love to have one made from a cypress knee. Monty
