Pretty tough to tell. Any chance that there's a railroad nearby? Sort of looks like the top to a large spike.

Welcome to the hobby, good luck with your hunts. You will find lots of clumped up old iron pieces and parts which are going to be tough to ID.

I wish I could be of more help, but I find chunks of unidentifiable metal all the time. Sometimes I'll dig it up and all I find is rusty colored soil where whatever it once was, it no longer is...

Plant a MD garden with different coins and stuff in it to help to learn your machine and sounds. Also, list your area and 'tector in the profile on the left, it helps people figure out what you may have.

Good luck!

Hello. Don't know if it is a meteorite but if it was you would have one of the greatest "First Finds" ever! Keep it up. I'm sure you will have many cool things to post for us in the future. HH everyone!

Not to be a downer, but it looks like a piece of slag to me. Steel works create tons of the stuff and send it to landfills. Over the years some has been used as a component of fill materials. I find it all over here in Pittsburgh.
