I Found this today on the surface very near chicago, it has some moss on it and i cleaned it a little... I would like some help to find out how old and what type of animal..Thanks bilt46..
Your find appears to be an Equus horse upper molar. Could be Pleistocene, but could also be from ten years ago. I don't think the Chicago area was very habitable for most of the Pleistocene. Even after the Wisconsinan Ice Sheet retreated, the Chicago area was wet prairie until it was drained for farming.

Because of the size of the tooth, I don't think it could be from ten years old. But I'm not a specialist

I don't know what that your observation means. Do you believe the tooth is too large or too small to be only ten years old??

Sooo... You think this tooth is too large to be recent. Do you imagine that horses have been getting smaller over time? ...That say Pleistocene horses were larger than modern horses? Modern horses come in all sizes, from Percherons to miniatures. Size of the tooth is a weak diagnostic character.

Look on the photo. The first one is from the Miocen, the second one is a molar teeth and the last one an other tooth. First, they doesn't have the same size. Moreover if you look the first photo of Bilt46, you will notice they have the same form.

I can see now that you are fond of weak diagnostics.

And I wondering if you're not getting at me.
I've said it "I'm not a specialist".
