Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Hi everyone,

I'm going to post a bunch of items we have unearthed over the past month via metal detector on my brother's 1683 four-acre property (a one-time tavern with blacksmith, farrier, 60-stable barn, Revolutionary War campsite(?), schoolhouse). We have found so many buttons, rosettes(?), buckles, so if anyone recognizes any of these items, we'd love to hear about them.

Thanks for viewing!

Hey btj2....great finds, excellent finds actually, but...no close-ups of the Morgan Dollar and Walker half!?....and several other little, round, silver trinkets...? We know, you're new here and hate to brag...lol..but hey, that's a KILLER site you have there and I'm sure tons more waiting to be unearthed...great hunt, thx for sharing, and welcome to T-net !...ddf

That's a very nice set of finds. I've never seen iron guts of a buckle hold up that well, but nothing ever surprises me anymore.

Question. Can you give us a close up of the button, center row all the way to the left. That looks like a Mass Militia. Also top center "5" button next to the rosette. That could be an 1812 button.

Way better... Rev War MASS Grand Army of 1775. A fake was posted recently, but looks like we should get our banner for one after all! Great find, and awesome site.

My Alberts book had the image and description on different pages so a put them together.

To the OP- that's an amazing find and a banner find for sure. Wicked rare!!!

Wow great site. Given the history of the site ,and it's size there should be a lot more to come and it it looks like you are the first to detect. Have fun places like that don't come along often.

Amazing finds! My favorites are probably the coppers. Looks like a bunch of them. Can we get a close up of those and the silver coins?

Wow... stellar dig... well done.

You should wallow in the dirt at that spot like a pig in you know what. heh

Okay Iron Patch...what's a "banner"? Sorry for our ignorance--newbies! Lisa & John

Wow! Thank you so much for cobbing together the book pages! It's so good to actually see a legit photo of it (there are none on the web to be found, that we could find anyway). An expert hinted that it is worth over $1,000 at auction...but then again, he may have wanted to buy it, so who knows if it might be worth more! ~Lisa & John

Since its property you can hit whenever you want - try and work section by section - work it slow and try and get it all
keep up the great work - and have fun doin it

Awesome finds! Shoe buckles galore.

I would like to see the coins too... I see two silver dollars, right?

That is one heck of a post my man. BIG congrats on all of the killer finds.

Close Ups

Hi everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome and enthusiasm. Several of you have asked for close-ups, sooo...here you go. Would enjoy hearing if you recognize anything that we haven't figured out yet! Note the musket ball carved into a die! Found on the bank of the vernal stream--probably where the troop camped? So many feet have trodden this property since it was a tavern. Check out the Nazi coin. Amazing some of the items come out of the ground so gorgeous after centuries, eh? This place is like an archaeological dig! So exciting! ;-) Enjoy!

You need to preserve that pewter button. I know how but would rather someone more versed walk you through it. Try sending a PM to members such as IronPatch, BillD (va), Buckleboy, or Ahab8.

Scrappy--we've been told not to touch the button or it will lose value?? If we are supposed to be doing something to preserve it, we certainly want to hear about that and would be grateful.

Pewter can dry and flake, and it has before with my buttons. Ask someone who knows that stuff like Buckleboy or Cannonballguy, or those other guys I mentioned before
