Just found this cool site with old Wisconsin folk tales and a couple of treasure legends written between
1921 and 1945 by the former curator of the Museum of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and secretary of the Wisconsin Archaeological Society. ( Charles E. Brown 1872-1946 )

Im in Oshkosh, probably considered more NE Wisconsin but I travel around quite a bit mostly north and west.

Charlie Brown, long a curator or secretary of the State Historical Society, maintained an extensive correspondence with people from all over the state.

The pamphlet in question was produced, as I recall, as a part of the Federal Writer's Project, a depression era funded project like WPA and others. In other words, these writers got paid by the federal government to write these stories. Not that anyone in this part of the country would fabricate stories for money back then, but there may be a smidgen of BS in them - or all BS as in the case of Paul Siefert of Richland Center.
