Hi all,
It's 13 degrees out here, blustery, and 6" of snow last night. My son from Texas challenged me to go out today. He doesn't have a detector yet and is getting his fix through Ohio.

Top row and coins in picture are today's finds in woods. Others from yesterday hunt.

Snake Attack A black head kept popping up through the snow in the woods. I thought a snake was striking at me from by a tree. When I moved forward it popped up; when I stepped back it hid in the snow. I was ready for an attack but it was just a limb I was stepping on--darn ole scary woods anyway. lol I also got stuck on the low hanging vines and gave up after 20 minutes but will go back.

The woods are next to a Riter's Ice Cream place that is open all year. It was so cold I decided to buy a cup of coffee there. "What, are you crazy Mr. This place sells cold Ice Cream." What was I thinking.

I decided to try the city park next. I turned the discrimination up to "coins only." Also turned my sensitivity way up. I decided to only look for coins on the surface--too frozen to dig deep.

Found 2-Quarters, 2-dimes, and 7-pennies total. Sled kids thought I was funny. I hit the grade school hill--also in the clad total.

My digger and pinpointer keep getting clogged with ice. I could not have found the coins without a pinpointer to rake the ground. I was very cold so only stayed out 1 1/2 hrs.

Man ,you are driven to get your fix going out in those conditions.Hats off to you.

Nice finds considering the weather wtg, that plate in the 3rd pic looks like a charge plate, does it have a name and address on it?

I commend your baravery to face the cold and your son's challenge.
Good finds for a cold day. That in itself is my cup of cofee and warms my bones to see you out there hunting.

another fellow ohioan getting his md fix. next time ask for a hot fudge sundae without the ice cream. that ought to warm you up.

good hunting in 2008

Impressive, now those are some really Hardcore finds my friend. I see you were up for the snake challenge and won without getting bitten by the snake, but the cold air would of bitten me really bad. Maybe the next time you go out and its that cold again, take a can of De-Icer with you for the ice build up on the digging tool and pinpointer. And Coffee is always a winner on these kinds of days. Continued Success and good hunting.

Those "stick snakes" are very tricky! Glad you didn't get bit... ;D ;)

I was out today also, 30 something degrees and some snow still on the ground. some ground frozen. A little over $2 in clad is better than not detecting at all.

What setting do you use for coins on the M6? I put mine at sens 60 and at nickel discrimination which is the first arrow. Curious what another M6 user is doing.

From the look's of the house's in the background there should be some silver hanging around somewhere.Glad you got out SKD considering the circumstance's.....Best of Luck in 08'...

M-6 Settings

Whites M-6:
I ran the discrimination all the way up to "Coins Only" but sensitivity just above normal full--cut the chatter that way. It seemed to work well because it only showed coins today and a loud chirp was almost always a coin at 0-1 inch. I pinpointed then raked the ground with my bullseye pinpointer then I used a thin brass rod to locate the coin before digging, if it was less than 1" under ground. Then I just pried it up--no mess no dirty snow. Most coins were on the top, just under the grass but not underground.

I did get several deeper hits, but ignored them. They will keep till spring.

Two kneepads, one on top of the next, were necessary to keep me up out of the snow. But like always, I made sure no holes or indication an MD-er was there.

Charge Plate

TreasurediggerNY

It may be a charge plate from a hospital. It seems I have seen them on old X-ray charts as well. It gives a name and address in the town near me but a Google search of maps shows no such address nor the person.

:o :o Wow, I never would have thought of getting out there in that cold and snow. You win the Diehard award in my opinion. I'd dig a privy in this weather, but I'd think twice about detecting. I remember a few years back when I was hardcore detecting, i tried digging a nice typical Indian Head signal in an area I've dug numerous Indians before. The problem was the ground was froze hard, I tried and destroyed two diggers and finally said I'd wait 'til the thaw. Never did find the target again, oh well. I'd have to say I recognize the park and I'm thinking Ritters on Dayton Xenia. There was an old 1800's school there at one time. Good luck and watch out for cold weather reptiles.

1800's School

Yes the school by Ritters was the old Beavercreek High School, then La Manci's Restaurant, then oops--ashes. I hope the woods will yield some old coins from the old school. May have to wait now till spring --oh, wait--50 degrees Saturday.

Man for a newby you are diehard.
Must be cause you are an ex service man. Congrads on getting out and for finding stuff burried under the snow.

Terry,

You're a better man than I am. I was a couch potato with the fireplace going. Too cold for me, but I plan to go out this weekend when it's supposed to get into the 50s :) :)

Now that's dedication buddy. I never really noticed your pics of your finds because I was too busy choking on my food from laughing so hard. I can see you dancing with the snake popping up and down...only to realize you were stepping on a stick the whole time ;D
GREAT POST
