found this tonight. It rang up in the nickel to gold range and I just about fell over when I flipped the plug over and this was laying in the hole because all I saw was the gold color.

This is exactly how it looked coming out of the ground I didn't clean it. I think it is a Military insignia of some kind. It was a pin at one time but the pin parts are now missing.

so can someone id this for me?

WWII US Army Air Corps Pilot's Wings Propeller Pin.

Vintage? Not sure. The stuff I read briefly talks about the gold color having come off the authentic stuff. There are pins like this out there for collectors and movie prop houses. They are reproductions. If you could nail down the metal that might help pin (punpun) a year on it.

Good find! Are those points on the ends of the backside of the wings pins/clasps for fastening onto something?

I'm wondering if the silver ones were enlisted pilots and the gold ones were officer pilots. OR, were the silver wings Army Air Corps and the gold ones were Naval Aviators. :icon_scratch: :icon_salut:

The prop and wings came back in 1983 to the U.S. Army when Aviation became a branch again. The prop and wings left the Army when the Air Corps became the Air Force in 1947. You can buy them any where there is an Army post now, there are different styles for use as jewelry that are similar but not issue. The prop and wings signify Branch, and do not mean you were a pilot. Enlisted and officers wore (still wear) this to indicate that they are part of the Aviation Branch, the enlisted folks wear theirs over a round disk.

Yours looks like the style used prior to 1947, however you can still buy them in that style also.

Background

Branch Insignia: A silver propeller in a vertical position between two gold wings in a horizontal position, 1 1/8 inches in width.

The Army Aviation branch was established as a basic branch of the Army effective 12 April 1983. The wings are modified and differ from designs currently used on Army and Air Force aviator badges. The insignia draws upon the original insignia for historical and symbolic purposes, but was deliberately modified to signify a new chapter in Army aviation history.
