Winged wheel button

This button was found in a stone wall in Rensselaer county, NY. The house on the property dates to 1825 and the property is located not far from an colonial era road.

It's made of a soft, light grey metal, maybe pewter? Hard to see on the picture of the back side, but there is a ring of letters, none legible.

This button is very similar to BernieL's button that he posted about in August 2010 (can't find that post again), especially the back.

Thanks in advance for any help identifying this

I remember that ;D I worked on that button-

here's the thread:

I find this really interesting. I'm not too far from you and I have a lead to detect a site in that area. Not sure when I will be able to arrange it though.

I'm pretty sure these are unconnected to that type.

As BB states, the backmark might help.

Clean up the reverse (if unsure how, ask BB for tips) & spell out as much of the letters as possible, including *s & dots if present.

It dates to circa 1830 but we will get a much better idea from the backmark.

What I can say, is Welcome to Tnet & its the only one I have seen like it & the only one posted on Tnet (as far as I'm aware) ;D Must be fairly rare & with a full ID maybe a specialist collectors piece ($$$).

Here's another thread with a button that looks like the one BerrnieL found. The interesting thing is that these buttons are -I think- all being found along the NY-Mass border.

That might be the connection between the winged wheel on Giddybumper's button and the other winged wheels. Probably different maker but maybe there was some industry or activity in that area that drew people there who wore a type of winged wheel button?
