Re: Winged What's It

By its size I'd guess a plaque of some sort. It pretty much looks like there's an anchor in the center as well, which would suggest a naval aviator type of thing. But I can't figure out what the letters stand for; AS - Air support? SF - Special Forces, Security Forces ???

Re: Winged What's It

Spent a bit of time researching this, but I'm still stumped.
Odds are, some sort of vehicle or machinery plaque, as the others have suggested, but it would be cool to know for sure.
Might be able to help me pjroo, if you can provide the following info;
- pics of the other side and from side on
- of what metal is it made ?- is it light or heavy for size?
- could the letters be H instead of A and/or E instead of F ?

Cheers, Mike

What is the source Ivan?

As a career AF SF I'd like to know who these fellas were.

Ivan... That was a great read, I lived through all that and know intimately one of those sources quoted. Thanks for the memories!

However, I'm fairly sure these guys don't were wings, in fact, it's not even about any special dudes, it's about a training mind-set "shift" across an entire career field. I was assigned to an AEF for many years... no wings.

AF Security Forces have been deploying "down-range" since before Vietnam doing base defense and perimeter security work - infantry style. This AEF paper is rehashing old ideas into a new environment.

Also... as part of my history lesson, the job used to be called Air Police, then Security Police... and finally recently Security Forces. That badge is too old to be a SF badge... it would have at the time been a SP badge, or an AP badge.

In conclusion, not USAF SF - IMHO.

I did however enjoy the read and the memories as stated before! :)

Re: Winged What's It

ok folks the anchor --see the anchor ring at the top? (middle center top) then just below it the anchors cross bar --the shank is hard to see but runs downward between the AS and the SF to the bottom -- the end of the anchor shank ends in a little bit at the bottom --the flukes are the curved part in the middle bottom--- it is rough but its there -- and I got bad eyes from too much reading to boot.

thus its some form of naval air related item---- Ivan

Re: Winged What's It

Ivan thanks.
I can see a 'suggestion' of an anchor , so to me :tongue3:, it's like we are looking at the back of the plaque, which is why I asked to see a pic of the other side, if possible.

To me it looks like "SS" eagle with a swastika on bottom.

Sorry, just trying to help but anyone who's seen an Indiana Jones movie has seen something similar.
