Friend found this metal detecting. It is about 3.5" long and 1.5" wide belt buckle or some kind of buckle. Any idea on what it is or a time period?

Pictures show front and back--don't know which is which and two view on edge to get the sense of the winged pieces.

Material is same color as in picture and may be copper. Found in SW Ohio in clay soil.

Thanks

Thanks Ivan. I wondered the same thing. Not sure how it would attach though. Do you have any pictures of the saddle strap?

Nice to see you are still on here, Ivan.

eazy --one strap end is like a modern belt -- it is folded over and stiched to the cross bar ----the other end is loose and feeds in with the loose tail part tucked "under"-- the wings are on the "outside" with the leather inside

So the wings are decoration--hum Thanks again Ivan. Find any new ship wrecks?

Added protection for a girth strap...has nothing to do with being a decoration...

Not uncommon

yep the wings kept the leather "girth" or belly strap from being cut up and damaged
