winchester "W" fake lock

Hello my name is Scott

I am a avid detectorist (metal detecting) and I found this lock.

I did some research and found some very helpfull web pages.

The question is...... is this a fake one from india or not, closer inspection revealed a possible
key cut ID on the inside lip of latch (see pics) area or is this so they can match a fake key to go with the fake lock.

Thanks any info would be great

The old style locks from India have real keys and are also functional. Where did you find it and same question why do you think it may be made by Winchester?

Re: winchester "W" fake lock

the back of it is blank .... same as the front , but minus the dust cover and key slot.

Here is a link that might explain what I meant.
http://www.switchkeys.com/INDIA.HTML

In that it may be a real lock and functional but other people purchased them from INDIA and doctored them up to look like a real collector item. but this one has marks on the inside ( see pic above ) and also the dust cover looks like it was machines not cast or filed to shape

Yes I am familiar with the $6 locks from India thats why I asked where you found it because if you purchased it at the local flea market its more likely to be from India than if you dug it at a CW site. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,397942.0.html

Im not really sure how to tell the difference maybe someone else can help. :dontknow:

Re: winchester "W" fake lock

I reread your first post and I think you are saying you found it metal detecting. Sorry I missed it.

Here is a quote from the Winchester padlock site I posted earlier. It appears to be saying that the type lock you found was never made by Winchester. (unless you can post a link saying different because I couldnt find one)

Fantasy padlocks are designs that were never originally made for the Winchester Co.
Reproductions are copies of the original designs made for the Winchester Co. You can easily see the differences in a side-by-side comparison. The only reproduction that I know of is the "SIX LEVER" #632, the rest are all fantasy.
