Would that mean an 8 gauge shot gun? I never hear of an 8 gauge shot gun. I know of 10 gauge shot guns and I just recovered a UMC Company 10 gauge head stamp yesterday. Pretty darn cool head stamp brass for sure mate.:headbang:

I guess there is even a 4 gauge but for industrial use only . I guess precise demo ? Take out that wall ?

Nice find, The 8 gauge or 8 bore were used in the 1800's for big game they were black powder shells with paper hulls and fired both solid slug as well as shot ( must have been a hell of a waterfowl gun) and as stated above in modern times found use as a industrial round.

Any chance the No. 8 refers to the size of shot? Like 4's...6's...8's.

No.......This this is huge . I have shot guns since I could hold one . It is not the shot size . Now....Who has an 8 gauge shotgun from the 1800s ? I do not know how you could even hang on to it when fired . A 10 ga waterfowl load will rock your shoulder and your face if you do not hang on .

A No 8 guage shotgun shell is rare...especially if it was all brass shell...they were used out here in this country as a sawed off coach gun...blackpowder wasn't a potent as smokeless so an 8 gauge was do-able on the shoulder and made a mess at close range on the victim....the shell was 4 inches long and packed 2 oz of shot...twice the amount of a standard 12 gauge...

i have seen these used for industrial duck hunting back in the day, mounted to small boats, kind of crazy.

Very nice relics! :occasion14:

The 8's were used for waterfowl like 1367 said. I know they were used in the Missouri River bottoms in Iowa by commercial hunters. Longer barrel and sometimes propped up by a tripod or shooting rest. I guess they really "reached out" too. Good luck.

Here is a visual side by side on the different shotgun shell GAUGES
