A friend of mine bought this medal at an estate sale yesterday. On the front it says "The Wiltshire Regiment," which I read was an infantry division in the British Army, but past that, we can't really find anything on this specific medal. Not expecting an amazing discovery or anything, so any info about it is welcome! Any ideas?

Can you look closely at that medal and see if the enameled "coat of arms" is glued maybe onto the original Wiltshire Regiment medal?

i think you 2 may be right :icon_thumright:
if you look just above the enameled crown, you can see the top triangle of the cross with the real crown on top of it

Ooooook....I see what ya'll are saying. I haven't actually held the medal yet, but will probably see my pal tomorrow, ipso facto, I'll see the medal. So now new questions...
a) Any suggestions on how to remove the glued on part? If we should at all...(and why would someone glue it on in the first place?)
b) Are the odds pretty good that this could be a replica? I haven't come across a picture of one that looks like this one at all.

On a side note...I've been following threads all over this forum for about 8 months now, since I recently began metal detecting...this is my first post and at the risk of being "that new guy with the emotions of 5 pregnant women watching a Hugh Grant movie while listening to The Bridges of Madison County audio book," I have to tell you guys, when I saw that ya'll had replied to my post I got so jazzed that I was officially a part of this whole thing. My thanks to you three...free guitar or bass lessons for any of you if we ever meet face to face. JK thats like getting your favorite book...written in Russian.

Hope to hear from ya'll soon.

To me, it appears as two pieces; the original badge of the Wiltshire Regiment is under the enameled crest.
Both the crown and the top portion of the Maltese Cross of the Wiltshire Regiment are visible. Neither piece is necessarily a replica.
And a belated Welcome to Treasure Net !!

Hey bud.... We're one big happy around here with the occasional grumpy uncle!!! LOL Like Don said.... Welcome aboard! Now, back to the medal. I, probably like Don and quite a few others that didn't respond, searched quite a bit and did not find anything concerning tha Wiltshire Regiment with that coat of arms. But i never saw anything with that starburst pattern either which is a part of the bottom section of that medal. That might be a custom piece from a soldier from that regiment with his familys coat of arms on it.... Just a thought. Either way...it is a cool piece. Keep posting, Kieth

Hi - not to rain on anyone's parade but ...looking at the obverse of the 'medal' it seems to be some sort of pot metal. IMO any sort of medal from a bonafide regiment would be made of a more substantial material (bronze perhaps?) and would have been struck on both sides.
I believe what you have there is a key fob.

Yea, Jose I came to a similar conclusion at about 3 this morning, that it was some sort of replica...it seemed weird to me too that the back just looked like a hunk of metal...either way, really do appreciate your input, didn't rain on anyone's parade here.
And thanks to all of you for your input, I'm looking forward to posting and conversing with you all!

Not sure what the discussion is about, but its just the way its been constructed. Its not a Medal, at least by UK definition its just an enamelled Military Badge (you often say insignia, but not a hat/beret type). This may or may not be Military issue but more likely something made for everyday use by the soldiers or family to show off their connection to the Regiment. Unsure what it attached to, maybe a large leather bag :dontknow: Age - 50 years or so.
