Hi,

For all of you who own an ACE 250 my question is: Will this machine find the old stuff?

Today I found my first 1907 IH. (which I scratched,I'm so pissed)
But I think I found it because it was at 2".
I have found stuff at 12" before as well.
If the coins are there will this machine be able to discriminate them or am I better off with a higher end machine. Say Scorpion or Infinium or Fischer's F2?

I know John-Edmonton frequents this site what do you think?

Any help would be appreciated.

The Ace250 will find the good stuff if it is there. The thing is you have to take the time to learn the machine..... but this is true with any machine. You could have the most expensive machine on the market and you will do not do good with it unless you learn what the machine is telling you. It takes ALOT of practice for you to learn any machine.
I have found lots of very nice old stuff with my Ace250 and still haven't learned it yet. I basically kicked mine to the curb because I want a more powerful machine with target ID for the deeper stuff in the swamps and chiesel-plowed fields around here. My thoughts are that I would rather spend the time learning a machine that is better suited for my needs than on something that I knew I would outgrow quickly in the first place. Not saying that the machine isn't great in other places, but for the majority of my hunting it's not what I need or want. Of course then again I could already have the machine I am looking for if I would take more time to learn it.
Take time to learn the machine you have and it will reward you.

I just read the book Treasure Hunting for Fun and Profit. There is alot of good information on how to use garret detectors.

The ACE is capable to find the "good stuff" if you get your coil over it. It is impossibe for even a top of the line detector and operator to find the good stuff if it isn't there.

You just make a bowl of popcorn, grab a beverage or two, GOOGLE "Ace 250 finds" and enjoy!

A metal detector is like a new girl friend. Spend a lot of time with it, treat it right and it will give it up.
I buy like new detectors every day , maybe used twice, because the owner just would not read the instructions or spend the time to learn it. There has yet to be a detector made that once you turn it on, stuff jumps out of the ground and surrenders.

Yeah the ACE will find good stuff at depht you could not suspect before...And I can testify about roman coins and stuff (hunted under Cultural Resources Bureau permission, of course). Here some result I'm collecting to check the ACE depht capabilities:

1. Roman lead fragment about 4" 1/2 x 3" not very thick - found at 20" with 9x12
2. Roman coin. Sestertius, a large and heavy bronze coin - found at 11" but in the removed soil.
3. Iron Age artifact. Bronze, 9" diameter but very thin - found at 16" with the standard coil.
4. Very small late - roman coins (a lot...), bronze - found at 4" - 6". More depht in the ground than air tested...???
5. Half horse shoe at about 12" (in my yard).
6. Roman ring. Bronze, not finger ring but chain ring - found at 6".

Still I'm waiting for a modern very deep coin, at now found someone but very shallow. But I don't go around hunting, normally...just for my job, so very old stuff only.

I really like the ACE, but it feels the ground balancing lack when you're on very old clay soils with pottery and bricks. I'm not sure F2 would be a real improvement than it, the F4 yes, maybe, but I don't know this machine.

Will Ace find the good stuff? In short, yes. But, hype to the contrary, it is not a magic wand. It has limits.

- It can be quirky for the newcomer, especially if you have experience with "smoother" detectors, like White's or Tesoros.

- It is surprising, since you get so much for $200 - it was Charles Garretts' goal to pack the most features possible into the unit. But it is a preset ground balance, entry level model. It acts like one.
(If you can, I'd suggest you save your money and get the GTP1350. It's worth the extra cost.)

- It is quite sensitive... in fact this can actually be a problem in trashy sites. But, and this is important - it is not a vacuum cleaner, sucking in goodies from far and wide. It can't find what isnt there, to echo the Sandman's sentiments.

SO, will it find an IH at 12"? Not according to my tests. DO you need it to? Not most of the time.
For a general purpose, knock around detector, it's pretty danged good.

I don't know about the "old stuff". However; my Ace has found alot of coins.
I have not found any jewelry or rare relics with it. I'm sure my coil has just
not gone over any of that type of stuff. I do find it to be alittle jumpy and
irratic at times. I'm not sure if I might not have a coil problem. I do very much
agree with the other posts, you have to learn your machine. Practice, practice.
I have a DFX, totally different animal, not for everyone and I can tell you, that
you have to learn your machine and practice. I have found incredible stuff with
the DFX.

The only complaint I have heard about the 250 is that it misses old military uniform buttons that others pick up.

Here are some of my finds from this summer with my ACE250...I'm really happy with it ;D

Nice finds everybody.

I bought the 250 so that my son could hit the dry sand with me at the beach. Everytime we had planned a trip together something would happen like raining or mom had to do something. Well, I took the Ace with me to hit the dry sand last month at one of the local beaches. I was very impressed with the little machine. I found a few bucks in change and some junk jewelry. I'm sure if there had been some good stuff it would have found it. The beach that my friend and I hit was a beach that is heavily hunted at least 5 times a day and right now with the water cooler there are very few visitors to the beach. What I found was just left overs that the others missed. Everything was in the 6 inch range +/-, most of the coins came out green or encrusted.

The other thing I noticed was when I placed the coil in the water I expected to hear the machine go nuts with falsing. It was still running smooth and quiet. I had heard on other posts that their machines just didn't like salt water. Maybe my son's is a little less sensitive. I know my GTI doesn't like the salt water but that's another story.

For the money I don't know how one can complain about the little machine. I would recommend it to anybody starting out. My opinion, each is entitled to theirs.
