The Ace 250 will lock on to coins in my ground to 3 1/2" to 4". The Fisher F2 ID jumps around more but can give an ID suggesting probable coin at 5". The notches on the F2 seem hard to set. Pinpointing is hard for some with Ace 250.

You can think about spending more, unless you really can't. If $200 is your limit, you might want to consider used detectors as well. Most used detectors have nothing wrong with them, but some are pretty heavy & may require more batteries. HH, George (MN)

I had the Ace 250 for a while and can say it was a good respectable detector. I found some nice things with mine and it was pretty durable. You can't go wrong with it at the price. I'm with George on this one, I'd look for something used - you could probably get a $400 detector for about $200 right now. Online dealers also have good selections of used detectors from trade ins. Some detectors I like for the money besides the Fisher and Ace are the older Umax Tesoros. Those are very nice for the $$. Watch the classifieds or post a "want to buy" ad.

Since you asked about the Ace or Fisher I will try to answer that question. I have owned both and would go with the F2 over the Ace. F2 has a digital display that gives you an idea of what is in the ground. It is fairly accurate down to 4 inches. The pinpointing is a lot easier to use. Better warranty.

The F2 was a real clad hog for me last year and as soon as it warms up I look forward to getting back out there with it. It ID's a dime accurately down to 4"- 5" and is easy to learn.

I've had my F2 since October of 2008 and used it for about a month before the weather in Minnesota took over.

I have found (4) Indian Heads. But no Silver coins. I have found Silver ring's and pendants and the range has been in the 4" area. the Indian's were at 5"-6" I use a danderlinePicker that has a 10" shaft and I was well over halfway in the hole. But it really is strong and easy to learn. I'm just worried about the durability. But very happy. I bought mine used for $135.00. no 4" disk. The owner never used it and is lookiing for it.

Good Luck.

Another option is to spend another $40.00 and get a Tesoro Silver uMax then you will have a better detector than the Ace & the F2 combined. I'm not just shooting the breeze, in my ground the Silver uMax was alot better than either the Ace or the F2 and I did like the F2, the Ace well thats another story. Steve.

Ski will probably yell at me, but I just sold my Silver to finance an F2. Wanted to try one. Not knocking the Silver - it's a great machine - and they really hold their value. Mild Ohio ground - should be interesting to see what the F2 will do here - it's gonna hafta work hard to match my past experience with the Silver.

I have used both detectors. I really liked both of them. My buddy loaned me his F2 one day and I did pretty good with it.

I own 2 ACE 250's. Always need a back up, LOL. My first year with my ACE, I found over 4,000 clad coins, over 100 silver coins, lots of tokens and even a 6 pound cannonball, it was 10 inches in the ground. That was in 2006. I also have a Sun Ray probe on the ACE.

At the moment I am using my F-75, trying to better myself with this detector because I'm heading for Virginia to hunt a CW site. Not sure the ACE will work in the HOT soil conditions in Va. But I will have my trusty ACE 250 with me, just in case I need a back up detector. I'll also have a Whites XLT with me.

Some people have a hard time pinpointing with the ACE. All I can say, is every detector is different and you can't just take it out for an hour or so and learn it. I hunted all year with mine and became pretty good at pinpointing. I could even tell when I got a silver signal. I like to hunt in all metal, if there isn't a lot of trash. I dig every signal that falls on the right side of the screen. Best bet is don't use a lot of sensitivity. Guys try to turn up the sensitivity and get all kinds of weird signals. Turn it down, go slow and have fun.

Good Luck with what ever detector you buy. Read the instructions and practice, practice, Practice!
Lay some coins down along with some trash items, see where they come in on the coil.
