Why you shouldn't buy $1 coin bags!!!!!!

This is a huge reason why the dollar won't take off.

I just went through "$1,000" in dollar coins and this is what I
pulled out of the bag.

Essentially, it cost me $20 (minus $2.55 for the quarters and nickels)
for a 2003D Sacagawea, 2 Euro coin, and a canadian dollar.
The 2 Euro is worth about $3.10 and the canadian dollar is sort of a wash,
but everything else is worthless.

Can you imagine being the retailer who goes all gung ho for the dollar coins
and you open up a roll with that SAK tag or a guitar pick.

At the mint, it costs $36 plus shipping to get a full roll of 2008 Sac's.
That used to sound expensive, but now it seems like a hot deal compared
to what it cost me for a circulated 2003D. Heck, even Littleton seems
like a hot deal compared to mine.

well, at least I enjoyed searching the bag, otherwise I would be upset.

Was it a bag of Ikes?

Nope, it was "supposedly" a half bag of small dollar coins.

What kind of good coins can you find in small ones?

SF,

Can possibly find near date 1979 Susan Bs. But from what I hear they are kind of rare and you would probably make more $ collecting aluminum cans.

Not much, I only grab these bags in order to help ensure I get all the others. You know, the old "beggers can't be choosers" philosophy.

Fox didn't you get a guitar pick in a bag of $$ too?? ;D

How well are you known at the bank that sold you the bag? The place I buy my rolls from (hand wrapped) will reimburse me if they are off (and I care to report it). You could always reroll them and give them back to the same bank with the quarters.

A couple problems with that philosophy.

1. Never want the bank to question your ethics and not trust you.
2. Every bank around me uses a coin counter. I know which ones I could dump these items back into, but that's were #1 comes into play.
3. If you keep going back to the bank to complain about short bags, rolls, etc... the Teller Supervisor AND Bank Manager will have a simple solution to stop the charges against the misc. account. And that would be to stop selling you coins.

Re: Why you shouldn't buy $1 coin bags!!!!!!

Why not just order boxes of the small dollar coins like people here do with halves? With the small dollar coins, there seems to not be an advantage to buying bags from coin machines like there is with halves (since none of the small dollars contain silver and thus are not really picked over by the general public-how many know about 1979 near dates?). If you buy a 1000 box from Brinks or whomever, chances are it will be spot on unlike getting a bag of loose coins that come from the machine or wherever, plus the coins may be in better condition-BUs.

Perhaps XX will have better luck, but every time I've ordered boxes of small dollars I've gotten whole boxes of brand new president dollars.

Re: Why you shouldn't buy $1 coin bags!!!!!!

I have ordered small dollar boxes and gotten mixed dollars, but lately it's just new-old-stock of Pres. dollars. One advantage of a bag versus a box would be that random stuff that is mixed in. You could get a bunch of euro coins or something, you never know.

Nah, it was in a bag 'o' halves. I found all of this mess. It was OK though, I only found 431 40%ers in the bag. Kind of made up for the loss if you know what I mean.
