WHY are these guidelines so hard to follow?
IMPORTANT!

When posting in "What Is It?", please give members the information they need to help identify your find:

1. Post sharp closeup photos of both the front and the back.

2. State the actual size of the item. Also, if possible, put something with it in the photo for scale: a common U.S. coin, a ruler, etc.

3. If there are any inscriptions which cannot be easily read in the photos, type them in full in your post.

4. If there are maker's marks, numbers, symbols, or other marks on the back which are not easily seen in the photo, post a closeup or a drawing of them.

5. Indicate the composition of the item. For example: "thin brass, filled with lead on the back."

• Do not deliberately withhold any information just to "have fun" seeing if members can guess correctly.

• Once your item has been identified, don't forget to mark it "Solved."

• Finally, if someone identifies your item or provides other helpful information, take time to post your appreciation— and maybe send a PM to say, "Thanks!" too.

I've often wondered if the next screen one sees after pressing "submit new thread" should be a confirmation page with the options of either; a) Yes, item details are shown and described per the guidelines b) oops, let me back up and add a bit

And maybe on the same page a reminder that the "marking item solved" instructions are readily available at the top of the what is it screen. It seems neither "sticky" thread has the intended visibility.

I put this out there not as a gripe, but an observation that these seemingly simple items are indeed being overlooked.

I agree.

I do think one thing should be added: Don't forget to put a like on someone's post if they have been helpful.

It is a polite way to say THANK YOU to the person who spent the time replying...and many of us have spent time looking up information to help correctly identify an object.

I recently helped someone identify an object on a What Is It thread. Even though I was 99% certain, right off the bat, I wanted to confirm that what I knew was 100% correct. I spent about a half an hour researching this item, about 15 minutes writing posts, and checked back numerous times on the thread.

It would have taken the original poster 2 seconds to have clicked the "like" button...

I'd like to add something...I enjoy identification of unknown objects...

but as a human..it is nice to receive a pat on the back once in a while...especially after one identifies an object now one else has a clue about...

This seems like a good idea and not difficult to implement??

Actually, it will happen again. I recall that you've written some very good What-Is-it forum answers in the past, back before the "Like" option became available. I've been (slowly) going through the many thousands of posts here from the pre-"Like" years, giving Likes to the posters who contibuted really good answers.

Let me humbly say, I am an "expert" in only a few of the dozens of relic-categories. Other people here (too many to name each of them individually) are much better than me in their particular specialty-subject of relics. I'm very glad they are willing to share their vast knowledge with us. In combination, the What-Is-It forum folks make the best relic-ID team on the internet.
