After 4 years of detecting, door knocking and hunting public parks exclusively, I finally learned the art of field hunting. Using Historic Map Works with the overlay feature and finding these old homesteads ROCKS! Since December 14th (my first field site success) a cut piece of Spanish Silver, 2 LCs and about 30 buttons. I have found 2 more sites. The 3rd and most recent site has been wonderful. 12-29-14 my First fatty Indian, 1-2-15 my First Civil War Button (infantry) and an LC, 1-4-15 another LC, 3 Indians, 1866 Shield Nickle, my FIRST Seated coin (1876 Dime), and 1 nice arrowhead and thumb scrapper and 3 broken pieces. Why didn't I figure this out sooner?

Over about 3 weeks time I found:
6 LCs
7 Indians including a Fatty Indian (My First)
1 Seated Dime (My First)
1 Shield Nickle
1 Cut piece of Spanish Silver (My First) (Very FIRST FIELD FIND)
1 Civil War Button (My First)
1 Nice Arrowhead
40 or so other buttons

And then WINTER arrived...........arghhhh I will definitely be doing more research, locating more sites, acquiring permissions and waiting for the THAW!

Good luck everyone when you can get back out there!

Congrats on the nice finds and the firsts. Those fields can be very productive.

Hey bro don't concentrate on the why nots! Just put all your effort into that good research and concentrate on future success. Most never become good at it. I sometimes would think to myself that I wished I had started detecting 15 years ago. But I wouldn't have been nearly as appreciative of the local history and not even close to as passionate and committed. I have taken things a step further lately and tried to find areas that are geographically suited to colonial settlement even if the history books or old maps show nothing. These spots will prob have never been hunted. This new site of mine is one and it's a GREAT feeling when you take a risk and it pays off. Good luck bro and concentrate on what we can control........killing it in the future :headbang:

hindsight is always just that, hindsight. yep, sometimes there is a lot of regret but the main thing is to learn and push onward with the intent to do better. as was previously said, now comes the appreciation even more. you have opened up a lot more to your detecting world and the rewards will show it. will be waiting to see what you find

Hello,

Congratulations on the great finds. I agree, researching is a very important part of the hobby.

Regards,

I don't agree with "door knocking"
I don't want unknown folks knocking on the door to my palatial estate.
Nice finds though.
Peace ✌

I have been using Historic Map Works to do a lot of research, the 1868 Ohio Atlas has a very detailed history of the Ohio Indian wars and the battles between the French and British Soldiers. There was a lot of action in SW Ohio especially between the Maumee and Miami. Here is the link to the history section Historic Atlas: Ohio State Atlas 1868 Ohio - Historic Map Works

I used the 1915 archeological atlas to find two Indian villages within in minutes of my house and dozens of burial sites. The town is built on top of an old Colonial fort and I know of a few Civil War battle fields I want to locate but most are on private property.
