I wentv to the Point Loma Naval Base and asked the desk jockey what happens to trained dolphins when they retire.
Basically, they keep them until they die of natural causes, which may be for years. They are well cared for and probably
would not survive in the wild if freed. But my real intention was to find out if they were ever used for private ventures, such as
picking up gold coins, bars from the depths. I'm sure they could be retrained from looking for mines and nuclear bombs.
Plus, the de-activated old guys would probably enjoy getting out in the deep blue again and chasing (yellow) tail again.
Think how well they could have done with the SS central America. Is Tommy still in jail?
