Why don't most of us look for these!?

Meteorites! Now, I know... there's a section here for meteorite hunting, but have any of you ever looked at it? We spend so much time blocking out iron that we're missing these sweet space rocks! I had a chance to travel to AZ and hunt with Geoff Notkin (of the show "Meteorite Men") and was amazed at how interesting and fun meteorite hunting can be! Sure, the high and dry climates of the deserts preserve them better than other places, but the truth is, they can be found everywhere! I turned my trip into an hour long FREE documentary. this is a suspect meteorite that i dug several years ago. found in a wooded area away from any known human activity. nickel iron,weighs 521.2 grams. some day i'll get around to having it checked to make sure.

I think reale bill makes a good point when he mentions an "area away from any known human activity". I live in Virginia and there are very few such areas that are already not "polluted" with all forms of scrap iron and multi-generational trash. On the flip side, I have been fortunate to gain multiple permissions for historic sites that yield nice relics and coins, so I tend to focus my time where it is most productive. Congrats on a very well made video and your meteor finds!

I have one that I bought (even made a little stand for it), but since that I don't live in Antarctica (too cold) or the deserts of Arizona, I just hunt the local beaches near my home.

I also have a little one Ive bought also I wouldn't know one if I found it I do have three or four metal rocksIve saved in with my finds Ill post some day

Georgia isn't known for meteorites, and has little open, uncluttered ground for searches like that. Tektites have been found here, but not a lot of meteorites. I still keep an eye out for them, but so far I'm batting zero. Nice hunt you had, and a great find.

Since you asked, I'll tell you why: it's because they are extremely rare, look like rocks, and I have my work cut out for me just digging a Seated Liberty type coin.

I don't look for them because there's never been a meteorite found here in Rhode Island! Why is that? I have no idea!

Super documentary! I really enjoyed it. Man it got the wheels turning in my head (usually a dangerous thing) I am intrigued, as if I didn't have enough things to do! LOL. Thanks for posting !
