Why does it seem like people find so many rings?

I guess that depends on what kinds of coins you are talking about. I'm pretty sure that most of us dug up tons of clad before we ever dug a ring. So by that rationale we dug thousands more coins than rings. If you are referring to silver coins or old copper, well my guess would be that those coins haven't been produced in over 40 years, so the ones that are being found have been there for a while. Rings on the other hand are being dropped everyday. Think about this.....take any random park or school in the US right now......how many people gathering at those places are wearing a ring? Now how many of them have some kind of collectible or rare coin on their person? My guess would be that the reason more rings are being found is because they are closer to the surface, have been in the ground less time, and the supply never diminishes.

I'll bet that's it! Thanks. Probably didn't seem like the brightest question...but I couldn't figure it out.

Just like today I spent about 1 1/2 hours at a field & pulled out $1.50 in clad 1 14k ring & 1 surgical steel ring. If I can't find the old stuff I would rather find the gold.

Another reason for seeing lots of rings compared to coins is because if everyone of us posted all the coins we find this forum would run out of room.
Many of us find more than we post but most of the finds are the common type mercs. or wash. and wheats. With tons of clad and are tired of posting the same old find.
But when a nice gold ring or silver chain is found the uncontrollable urge to brag erupts and the post button is struck.

just my thoughts

Weather and other factors cause the body to contract and expand of course! Sometimes the wifes rings are so tight they wouldnt come off if she wanted them to, other times shes trying to keep them from falling off!! And sometimes she cant where them because they would fall off!! Overall I think unless your very lucky most of us have dug HOARDS of tabs and clad along with a FEW quality rings. Over TIME anyone who metal detects will find there share of rings eventualy.

I fully agree :icon_thumright:

I'm certainly not a ring magnet having only dug 2 in the last 5 years, and maybe 10 total. But since 4 are quality keepers I'm not too bad at 40%. I just got to up the average to more than one a year. :)

I gave up most of the land hunting when I started to water hunt for the many more rings and jewelry I would find there. You do lots better when you visit the beaches where people with more money go as the jewelry is better quality. Many hunters today are now wise to dig every sound the detector makes so natch the ring count goes up.

I am finding that going to the beach for a swim is scaling back what with couch potatoes and video games. Lots harder to lose a ring on the couch. Years ago it was easy to find five to ten rings a day. Now I feel lucky to find one. But it is rare now if I post a find here.

As Toby said, fingers shrink and rings loosen in the cold or while swimming. That is why so many are found at the beach. Tourist beaches are much better than local beaches as locals leave their jewellry at home before going swimming.
Then there is the 'Mum/kids scenario'. Mum wraps her rings in her towel to be safe but the kids get out of the water first and grab her towel. Zing... the rings are gone. Have you ever dropped a ring in dry sand and tried to find it without a detector? Not easy! Don't forget the weekend creek swimming holes. You can always find rings in there too. Coins are generally kept in pockets and don't normally fall out unless a person sits down. Rings are on fingers that are constantly out, or, going in and out of pockets and can easily slip off particularly on a cold day. Where do I find rings? Beaches, Sporting fields, creeks, schools, and quite a number in kids play areas, eg under the swings and monkey bars.
Hope this helps Big Dan.
