What is it that possesses you to grab a mechanical stick and go off into the woods, parks, fields, etc.. and swing said mechanical stick?

The items you seek are buried beneath the earth; recovering them requires you to bend, stoop, squat, and DIG in the ground! Your fingernails will be dirty, the knees of your pants will be stained, and you may have to actually carry TRASH that doesn't belong to you out of an area!

Each trip into the "field" is an expedition into the unknown; you may find NOTHING! Why do it?

People are going to look at you as though you are strange, they'll sometimes question your intentions, they may even offer you a handout thinking you are a victim of the recession and have stooped to looking for change with a MD to make ends meet! :o

I do it because it's a LOT of fun and I really love history! Of course I also love the clad that adds to the "vacation fund" the spousal unit and I have going...

What's your excuse?

I think you and my wife are related! I like that!

It really is amazing just how you can really CHILL after a stressful day by getting the MD in your hand and going forward...

YES!....that's why I refer to my machine as my mental detector!

PLUS...I now have a side-line biz thanks to this marvelous hobby ;D I upcycle some of the shards I find while digging and create mosaic pieces.

You never know what will be under the coil. If you dig an older coin, you can only imagine who it was, and how they lost it.

The thrill of the hunt and excitement of the find !!!!

It started as a challenge to find SOMETHING. Now it's an addiction to find SOMETHING. Clad is fine to pay for the batteries, but the desire is to find something old with date, patent number or history to it. And then let your mind wander and wonder about where the coin, musketball, horseshoe or dog license came from. The need to find something older, better or more valuable than the last.

We are all a bit mental. I honestly do it less for the thrill of finding valuables, and the thought of finding lost things. Also, getting thanked by strange parents for cleaning up tot lots is a good thing.

:tongue3: Need I say more? ;D

Any time spent away from the burdens of life such as stupid work, yard work, taking out the trash, mowing the yard, paying the bill [well some of them], worrying about college payments, honey do lists, the yelling kids, etc etc is just pure pleasure. Even though all I find is clad 19 out of 20 times it's all good. I'd be doing something like fishing or golf. Anything to get away from the BS of everyday living.
Look what I found today - 64 cents- Yahoo!!! Get my drift?

One question... untold numbers of answers. Besides the obvious possibility of riches. Removing trash is a noble volunteer service. I removed a 1/4 rod, 2 ft long, pointed uphill on a popular sledding hill. Trash gone ... one less danger.

I think you just answered it for me.
It's the mystery involved combined with the history of the find.

Yes, yes I think that's it! It's the thrill of the hunt! ;D

Frankly, being a generous person, I do it in order to put back into circulation to boost the economy, any old gold or Silver bars that are just lying around in some damp hole or cave.

uh...is there something WRONG with stooping to using a MD to find coins to make ends meet? :help: ;D
