Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

I can't tell you why your IH was holed, but I'm envious nonetheless. I have yet to find my first holed coin. They have SO much character! Nice find.

Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

Thanks I guess it is still a find, it's not like it is in mint shape otherwise. It can be a zipper pull on my detector bag!

Think of it this way relic.......It is one of a kind!

I think I see the start of another hole in the middle of the indian if so it could be the start of a wizzer. Do you see it?

Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

It must have been "stylish " to wear them around you neck as a necklace. I have seen many old coins "abused" this way :-\

Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

People use to hole coins for all different reasons, mostly silver so they didn't lose them. Some made jewelry with coins. Someone on here, a while back, posted a bracelet that they had purchased that was all holed seated dimes, all in nice condition.

I might be wrong but it might have been made into jewelry (a pendent) by a Native American. It might be just my imagination running wild. Thinking about it why would someone spend the time to place holes in a penny? I know some have suggested that they made toys with them also. I guess we will never know about this one. Still, it is a nice find. I would love to find a holed coin.

Nice find

Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

Wouldn't you like to talk the who ever did that. Anyway nice find......

Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

Haha, just like mine! The first few years I was detecting I found an 1864 L Indian with a hole smack dab in the center. It was my oldest coin until this year.

What would a penny buy back in 1863. Maybe a bushel of wheat. :icon_pirat:

That is one of the best things I've ever heard for the use of a holed coin. It certainly beats wearing it hanging on your ear. Kudos.

Even though someone punched a hole a it, it is still an IH :icon_thumleft:

Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

hate money -- taken off the body of a dead union soldier -- holed as a rememberance * many southerners lost freind and kin --so they got even by shooting a yankee soldier and looting a coin or coins from em keeping them and holing it . --sort of a never forget "war trophy" item -- note those are both union civil war era coins -- if these coins were used by southerners as "money" due to the great shortage of money --the "yankee" coins used would be "defaced" in this manner to show you were not "pro" yankee

Re: Why did someone do this to my oldest indian?

I have another wild theory based on what the Saxons did to Roman coins:

Someone who disliked Native American's drilled a hole so the head was looking down at their feet as a sign of disrespect. Also meant that the 'One Cent' (power, money, & success) read the correct way.

Looks like it was lost sometime after the CW & into the end of the Indian Wars.
