Found milk token. Does anyone know how old it is. (NOT SOLVED)

I would venture to guess it's a company store token maybe. From the 1920's to the 1940's maybe. Just a guess though.

tk - you might consider posting your pics (both sides) on TokenCatalog.com - this token is what is called a "maverick" as it does not have the location on it. As I read the photo, it says "O. W. Dairy" in which the initials are either that of the owner of the dairy or the initials of the name of the dairy. Omar Wilson Dairy or Out West Dairy, for instance. Somebody viewing the tokencatalog website may recognize or come across the solution. You might also give a clue as to what part of the world this was found in. That would only be a starting place for the search. Also, in time, the ongoing studies of diework may disclose other dairy tokens that used the same die. That would not only help with finding where it was used, but may be able to give an approximate date.

One typical way in which these tokens were used is that a dairy (which might well be rural) would have a point of contact in a nearby town. This might be at the hardware store or some other retail outlet. A customer could go there and arrange to be put on the milk delivery route and purchase a number of these tokens. Then, after the first delivery to their doorstep, they would put out the empty bottle with a token inside. The milk delivery person would then take the empty bottles (which were subsequently washed and re-used), and leave fresh milk in the amount determined by the number of tokens left out.

This system accomplished several things. First, dairies had to buy bottles, so they always wanted to get them back into the system. It allowed the milkman to come and go before the customer was even awake, without having to make change as the tokens were proof that the customer had pre-paid. Plus, in locations where cash was used instead of tokens, it didn't take long for neighborhood kids to find they could make the rounds and get "free money". Tokens put the kibosh on that.
