who knew I could detect this time of year hah

With a little help from a backhoe doing some work at an old site...I was able to make a nice recovery today.

A trench was being put in at a site I hunt...and the soil was somewhat loose and broken up in piles. I didn't find much...but this was enough to keep me happy.

I am guessing it's a finial from a British military flag...although I could be wrong. Not sure how old it is...but should fall anywhere from 1812-1860!? I tend to think it's closer to 1860...but any help would be appreciated.

Penny shown for size.

Neat. I found one of those '96 pennies here in Houston.

Come on...if you are going to turn my post into a joke...at least make it funny! Kinda hard to do when you get the year wrong...the penny is a 2006 ;D

Wess, this ain't no laughing matter, I haven't a clue. Never found one of those pennies yet either. Just hang on a bit and someone will come to your rescue. It might help to include where you found it, ie: battle site, etc. Monty

Top of a flaming grenade ornament or medal? I've seen them found in Canada in the past.

I agree with KenB: maybe the flame portion of a grenadier's badge.

I was thinking it's the flame from a "Statue of Liberty" souvenir. But that would make it 1880's at the oldest...

Thanks for your answers folks.

I see where you are going with the grenadiers badge...and I recognized the similarity before posting the item. That being said...I have seen the "flames" used on capbadges of greadiers, ordanance, artillery etc here...and while I think there is association with one of those units...I don't think it's a capbadge. They were generally one piece. The design also varies slightly. Hence the reason I was thinking flag finial as it appears to have been inserted into something.

I'd also think so, it seems to thin and long for a grenadiers badge..At least it looks so to me..

well, this piece was found here in Ontario, Canada...and at a site that has turned up nothing but military items. I think anything statue of liberty can be ruled out. I am 100% certain it's a military item.

I agree, the flames seem to be "narrower" than the grenadiers flames. Also, the bottom portion appears to be a ferrous type of metal.Definitely not the same as the "flame" portion. However it does appear to be rather small for a flag finial of that era, would you agree? Interesting find.Still searching for an answer. :)

Hey Wess, good to see your able to get out and dig. Did you find this whatzit at the same site as your hinged doohickey? You know what I mean. ::)
Could they be related?

I agree not a grenadiers badge.

Excellent find! Considering your weather, finding that flaming torch kinda took the chill off ya...a little excitment, huh? ;D ;D
