Who else Finds Pewter Buttons?

I don't see them on here very often so was wondering who else out there digs these pewter type buttons. Had mine out today doing a little spring cleaning well Urethaneing.Thought I'd take some new shots & ask again does anyone else find these very often. Top row are all dome shaped ones,followed by the few designed ones,followed by the flat ones,with a side of small solid round & cone shaped ones.My best though is the REV.War continetal 10th Reg.

These would be like the top two rows....................(14mm

Circa 16th century)

The little cone one something like this..............(12.32mm diameter x 4.68mm deep

Circa 15th - early 17th century)

The little round solid ones may be some kind of tombac cause they do seem different a little & would be something like these................

I've found a few of these mostly at the earliest sites. Here's a pic of some I took a few years ago and I've added more since that time.

I've dug quite a few. Probably 50-100 military and maybe 50-100 civilian. Of course the best condition ones never end up being military.

Just ignore the brass one stuck in there.

Nice buttons guy's thanks for posting them I kinda thought some of you guy's that get into the earlier sites might have a few around.Neat to see the different types to me.Bill I agree you have to get early before they show.Patch I wish I could find the military here like that as most of the ones I find do come up in fairly good shape just not the military type here though.

They are easy to miss. I have found a few, and many times they have been on the ferrous side of the scale or in the single digits on my V3i.

WOW! I love that Continental 10th regt. I have found a number of the civilian early pewter, usually plain faces, sometimes with geometric designs. Here are some Rev found in water and the NC button came from land--all in as found condition.

They are easy to miss. I have found a few, and many times they have been on the ferrous side of the scale or in the single digits on my V3i.

They have been on the low side for me as well Neil,although some I can barely hear & some ring strong.Myself I can't remember ever finding one at a great depth,& if it wasn't for me hunting the way I do were they wash out from shore banks then my numbers might not be as good.Cause around here on the coast things can sink purdy quick to out of range for most detectors including my explorer.So finding solid ground that keeps objects from sinking is a big part of the way I hunt.

Very nice early buttons Keith,& military to boot.
You've made some good finds with those,not much Rev. war action here this far out on the coast for me.Had right much inland but I'm to far out.The 10th I found gave up some of the only military items I've been able to come across.There was a tudor rose lieutenant navy button and a stock buckle part of a broken bayonet besides musket balls found at this site.The site it self had many button though & is one I need to get back to sometime soon & give another shot.

I hadn't seen this thread, great idea
Silversimons site is great, he's been working on it lately, hopefully adding new items.

I have found a lot of pewters, mostly plain flats, I have a good size bowlful of these.
some of them are so primitive with huge shanks, quite interesting.

I'm including a 4 leaf clover item that has no ID..

half a dozen cast lead/pewters with a star/flower in two sizes, (from different sites)

three low domed pimples, and that High dome I recently found and described as an 'Acorn' .
The large ornate button has been described as a 'Quite rare' style by a member from the UK.

for militaries, a Brit 60th foot reg and a US 10th like yours, later ones include two foliated script I's and 3 different varieties of the pewter 'US' ..
(And a couple that are unidentifiable, though definitely script militaries, possibly 'Regiment of Artillerists')
I will try to find the pix I can, I only have them catalogued by date found....
I hunt in all metal almost everywhere, it seems to be the best technique for finding

items like these in the iron pits, though the constant whomp whomp of iron gets mindnumbing.
