I've had a DFX for 4 months and have found a lot of rings, etc. For me, there is no real downside to the unit. If you don't use the turn-on-and-go programs and make your own, you need to stop and think about where you are hunting and what you are hunting for and set up the unit accordingly. If you don't like a lot of bells and whistles, then don't get one. If you like technology and the ability to customize the detector, then it's great. It has very good target separation, great discrimination (the best as far as I'm concerned) the depth is very good, it has many coils to choose from, you can mount a SunRay probe and it's pretty easy to swing. If you have a big coil and a SunRay, it can get a bit heavy after a while. They do have hipmount kits for the control box. Depending on how you set it up, you can get information overload, but this can be remedied by implementing appropriate settings/discrimination, etc. It's been said before, but it really is many detectors in one unit.

I started with an XLT its awesome. I was always told to get the DFX or "youll always wish you had". So I did. The DFX programs already in it are great and it also allows, although not without alot of practice, writing your own custom programs. The DFX is great the first summer with it, and it gets better every year as you get more familiar with it. My wife now uses the XLT and loves the fact she doesnt have/want to change anything on it. I love playing with my own programs on the DFX. Its a man thing. HH. dave.

The features I like best about the xlt and dfx is the depth gauge and pinpointing.
You don't know how important these things are 'til you use a machine without them.
The depth is nice too.

I love my DFX but it is not for the meek at heart. If you enjoy the peacful nature of the QXT (My first machine & I use it as a backup & guest machine) then go for the DFX. It is a lot noiser but once you learn it, it is unbeatable. Just don't expect to learn it overnight. I've been using mine for three years or more & there are still things it will do that I don't know how to do.

I think DFX is supposed to mean Dual-Frequency...not sure about the others.

I use a MXT. I think it rates right there with the xlt. The pros-Easy to operate turn on and go. Better balanced (physically). Very good depth and pinpointing. Can be adjusted on the fly. Cons- Very sensitive a little noisy. Can not make own programs.
I would not change mine for any other whites. Once you really learn how to adjust it properly I think it will keep up with the xlt or the dfx and save you a couple hundred.
