whites metal dtectors

Hi Charles
I own the GMT as well as two other gold detectors- the X-5 and the new Goldscan 5(PI).
I am very pleased with my GMT. It is an excellent machine. I am giving you a link to Steve H's review of gold detectors including the GMT.

A choice of a gold detector depends on where you detect and what you are looking for. Vlfs like the GMT are more sensitive than PIs for the smallest gold pieces and have some degree of iron ID. Vlfs are also cheaper than PIs and can detect specimen gold(stuff in mine dumps which is not solid- like wire gold) which PIs can not. However, VLFs will detect "hot rocks" which a PI may ignore. PIs on the other hand because they are not effected as much by mineralization are deeper but lack iron ID(Goldscan 5 is the exception in that it can ID iron)

I can not use my GMT in some areas with incredible mineralization and a lot of "hot rocks" . However, areas with a lot of
iron a GMT is well suited. Folks in desert areas like Arizona and Nevada with little iron and a lot of hot rocks and mineralization
use PIs. Serious nugget hunters usually end up with PIs.

I use my GMT here in Colorado in areas with a lot of iron trash which are unsuitable for PIs. To be honest knowing what I know now- if I was going to buy a VLF now for gold hunting(also coin and relic) I would have chosen the Whites MXT. The reason why is given in Steve H's MXT VDI secrets for gold nuggets(link below). I am pleased with my GMT but VDI abilities and coin and relic ability would have made me look at the MXT- Just a personal decision.

thanks for the info, I imagine my best choice would still be the gmt. It sounded like he beleives the gmt to be better for smaller gold, and being in northern california that may be better, i still have my xlt for the rest of the hunting. I have a hard time beleiving a machine that can do multiple things is superior at any. Maybe i am wrong, i am new at this. I have seen several posts in several places that say the xlt is an exellent relic/coin machine and the gmt is an exellent gold machine but haven't seen much saying the mxt is exellent at both, maybe someone with experience on a mxt could fill me in. your take on the gmt just makes me want one more, thank you
Charles

Well i can confirm the MXT with a 5.3 coil in trashy areas rocks. It picks up coins/watches/relics like a champ in some really trashy parks for me. I upgraded from an IDX and the difference is amazing in every way. Not to dog the IDX but it MXT with the 5.3 on coins is amazing. I really am no pro at coin hunting either but it sure helps to have a great detector to compensate....ha ha.
