Whites DFX

This was White's top-of-the-line unit until they brought out the 3 frequency machines. (VX3, V3i) It's a terrific detector. The dual freq. correlate mode does a great job of iron cancellation when working around burned-down buildings where there are tons of nails, etc. It also does a good job on the beach when working back and forth from wet to dry areas. It can also be used in single freq. modes of either 3khz for silver, or 15khz for gold, platinum, nickels, etc, or you can run it in "best data" mode where it gives back the results from the freq. that gives the best returning signal. Good, used units are probably one of the best "bang for the bucks" out there right now. The downside is you won't learn to run it well in 5 minutes. Like all really good machines, it has a "learning curve". But, it comes with preset factory programs to get you off to a fast start...like coins, coin & jewelry, relics, and prospecting.

Thanks Jim that was very helpful. I bought this 4 1/2 years ago brand new because it was the top of the line, I've used it in my yard in Utah, probably got 3hours on it
(Retirement present). I've got time now to learn to use it. Going to try it around Virginia beach on Monday. Am excited!!
Someone else said its not a good small gold finder ???
Thanks again Jim

I don't know why people say stuff like that, except maybe they don't know how to use it. You can operate it in "all metal" mode, and at 15khz for gold, platinum, etc...the low conductor metals. It won't pick up the tiny stuff the GMT, and Fisher Gold Bug 2 will find, but it does just as well as any other detector out there that operates at that frequency. Typically, the higher frequency units have an advantage when looking for tiny pieces of gold. The Fisher GB2 operates at 73khz. The White's GMT, which I use, operates at 48 khz. That said, I don't feel all that handicapped when using the DFX for gold, as I sometimes do. Sometimes, when I'm out looking for coins & relics at old mining camps, I'll take a swing around on prospecting mode just in case. I've found stuff as small as #8 shot, which is pretty good IMHO. If you want to use it prospecting, do an Internet search for prospecting programs for it. There are a few out there. The factory prospecting program is just "OK". Skilled users have come up with some pretty good tweaks to get more out of it when prospecting. As you'll learn on the DFX...once you have a program installed, you can "save" it, and go back to it any time you want. A really good book on the DFX is "Digging Deeper with the DFX" by Jeff Foster.
Best of luck,
Jim

Thanks Jim, i will check on those programs and check into that book. Exactly what I needed.

It's a great machine if you will spend the time to learn it, but it won't happen overnight. I agree totally with Jim In ID. Have used my DFX since 2007 and love it.
