Whites DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

Moving up is a tough decision much as difficult as buying your first detector. Everone has an opinion and you know what they say opinions are like"They're like a$$ho... and everbody has one!" ;D ;D I am presently shopping to move up also and the ads are so confusing. I read about White's and yep, it's the DFX and then I read a Fisher or Garrets ad and hmmmm, maybe that's the way to go? I have about decided that the one I get will be the one most similar to the one I have now at least in method of operation. I like the turn on and go pre-programed features and that may eliminate one, and I like a good display screen with sharp graphics and that may eliminate another. Then I read this and other forums for personal testimonies. Of course anyone who espouses an opinion on the forums is just a little prejudiced for their particular brand of MD and you have to take that into account. Also, you have to think about what you will most use your new MD for, coin shooting, hunting jewelry, relics, beach combing, or even under water? I have about narrowed my choice down to one advertised as having the capabilities and preprogramed to do a little of each of these chores except under water. I doubt I would have many opportunities to search in water or ocean beaches. Just a few of the things to consider and what is going on in my pea sized brain. Oh, and before you buy see if you have a local dealer where you can go and compare some of your choices side by side.

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

The top end detectors from all of the major companies are good. The best you can do is try some demos at local dealers, pick the one you are comfortable with, and LEARN IT WELL. That last line is the most important of all. You can look through this and any other forum and see all of the brand wars going, who hunts with who using whatever brand, who finds more, etc. Those are folks that make me wonder why they detect. I use Whites, always have, always will. My first one decades ago was a Whites and it is nothing more than personal preference. Will I put down Minelab? No. They have great machines and if you are comfortable with them and how they operate, then go for it. Try all brands out in person. If you like a detector that is easy to set up and go, and still has good depth, my recommendation would be to try the MXT. My DFX will go a bit deeper most of the time, but not by much. It is easier to set up and get going than the DFX, and sometimes that is why I take it out instead of the DFX. Just my opinions, demo everything and see what you like most, then learn it well.

You're going to get far more Whites recommendations here--this is Whites country ;)

And, while I'll kid a lot, White does make great machines today (don't tell em I said this).

There are very few of us Minelab users here so it isn't going to be fair. I use the Minelab Excalibur and I can tell you truthfully it is absolutely awesome! I did have to buy a straight shaft for it as the standard shaft is not balanced properly. But, other than the shaft thing, the workmenship and operational abilities of this detector are astounding!

I hunt both water and land so I need a detector that can get wet. My choice was narrowed down by this. Remember, if you drop a non-waterproof detector in the drink you most likely will be finding out how good your warranty is ?;)

Minelab is known for great customer service even after the warrentee runs out.

Sorry I can't tell you about the Explorer--I don't own that model. I know in the UK and other parts of the world it's the supreme choice at ancient sites. Other than that I can't help.

Actually, I comment here mainly because I like to write about my little hobby. But actually, I hope no one buys a Minelab. I don't want my competitors in my area to get them!? ;)

Best to you.
Have you tried Garrett's infinium LS ?

The depth on it is unbelievable as well as the features . Its got first of its kind controls for a pulse induction . I'm honestly not too big on the whites underwater detectors I've sold but the new infinium is unbelievable . You should really look into one .

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

? ? ? I recently got the Dfx and EXP II and am in the process of learning them.
At the moment, my go to machine is the EXP II. ?I'm lagging in the learning dept. on the Dfx.
So far the EXP II has been smoother operating. Where as the Dfx seems to be more unstable and static prone. I've been up and down on sensitivity and gain which helps but hasn't been the entire solution. Another area on the Dfx has been trying to synchronize the sweep speed and recovery speed in combination with gain and ground filtering so it'll have smoother signal response.
Which has proved difficult so far. At times i've thought the Dfx might be defective, but more likely it has a defective operator. I've ordered the Digging Deeper with the Dfx book, and hopefully that will get me on track. One thing i can say about them, is that if depth of detection has ever been a concern. It won't be after purchasing either one. They are as deep as anything out there, and i dare say deeper. And i've owned the top models of most of the brands available. ? ? HH

I don't really mean that---you're right on there good buddy 8)

I couldn't help but smile as I read your post--I sure hope my competitors in this area never read your post! Most of them are still looking for the magic wand? ;D

Good post but go easy on the truth here--knowwhatImean?
Hey did you read my post ? I'm just curious if you've tried or looked into one . I'm not trying to make a sale . I'm all brick and mortar here .

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

I agree with yah on all that . The ace 250 is an AWESOME model . I can't keep them in the store . The sell fast . Give one a try . The best deal out there right now IMHO .

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

My detecting buddy Don bought a 250, can't beat it at the price!! That is one hands down win for Garrett.

Saw a guy use channel locks to dowse with, once.
I tried it, but it didn't work out. Kept ripping the little grips off trying to keep it from pointing to the ground. Was i doing something wrong? HH

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

YOU KNOW I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I PICKED UP A TREASURE MAGAZINE AND THE GLINT I GOT IN MY EYE. i DIDN'T HAVE A METAL DETECTOR THEN, BUT AFTER THAT MAGAZINE I WANTED ONE. WE WAS SO POOR WHEN WE DID GET A WHITES WE COULDN,T AFFORD ONE WITH DISCRIMINATE, SO WE GOT ONE THAT WAS SCREW CAP DIGGIN MACHINE. i WASN'T WELL LIKED IN HIGH SCHOOL AND DIDN'T HAVE MANY FRIENDS, BUT I ALWAYS HAD THOSE MAGAZINES AND THAT DETECTOR. WHEN I WAS THIRTEEN MY MOTHER WOULD DROP ME AT THE BASE OF THE MOUNTAIN AND COME BACK AND GET ME LATER. THOSE MAGAZINES AND THAT DETECTOR GOT ME THRU. I NOW HAVE PICTURES OF MY KIDS PANNING AT RICH HILL, HUNTING GEODES IN CAMP VERDE, PANNING AT BRECKINRIDGE, ON A CHALCOPYRITE VEIN AT TARRYALL, AND A GHOST TOWN BY CRIPPLE CREEK. THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. WE HAVE ALWAYS BOUGHT ISSUES THAT INTERESTED US. MY OLDEST DAUGHTER NOW WANTS TO BE A HISTORY TEACHER AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD I HAVE NOT HAD ANY TROUBLE OUT OF MY KIDS. THEY ARE GOOD KIDS. I OFTEN WONDER IF NOT FOR THOSE MAGAZINES IF I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THE TRIGGER MAN LIKE COLUMBINE.
DON'T MISS WHATS IMPORTANT IN TREASURE HUNTING. THE TREASURE YOU'LL FIND IS MORE VALUABLE THAN GOLD. AND THANK YOU EASTERN AND WESTERN TREASURE FOR THE LIFE YOU GAVE ME.

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

Doesn't matter what make they are. All detectors are basicily the same.
Once you've dropped them off a 10 story building.

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

? ? ? ?I sympathize. It is frustrating when you've got the bug to go, but the weather won't cooperate.? Hope your weather subsides.
? ? ? If it'll make you feel better, the weather here has only been getting up to the 70's and i been getting out regularly. ;D

? ? ? ? ? Hope you take this in the fun vein that was intended.
? ? Besides, from the finds i see you've made lately, i need this time to catch up.
? ? ?I'm sure you'll be out very soon.? ? ? ? ? ? ?
If you would get rid of your Minelab and get another brand.
Then me and my Minelab, could catch up.
Hope nobody overhears this, or we'll have another long forum debate. HH

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

I have an Infinium, Sov. XS pro (WOT, 10", 7.5"), Excalibur 1000, GTI 1500 (9.5", 12.5"), modded Cobra II.. and the Infinium blows them all away re. depth.. period & regardless of what coil I put on the other detectors. That is, of course, over the heavily mineralized soil I hunt. It also has superior deep iron ID. Where the other detectors shine is in general disc./ID. There are a number of sites where (because of the iron) the Infinium is about on par re. disc.; won't dig more or less junk, just different junk. ..Willy.?

Re: White's DFX -VS- Minelab EX ll

LOL. Every time I see an Infinium mentioned it gets ignored. Till Willy, that is.

I have been going nucking futs on replacing my White's 4B for gold, meteorites and relics in Az soil.

Infinium, Minelab Ex II or 3500, or even a non PI White's MXT? I can't stand it!

I have practically decided to get a MXT and an Infinium and still save more than a grand over that 3500! Still.... I can't help thinking of just a couple nuggets more that high priced new thing might bring, especially in the well worked goldfields, Argghh!
