My buddy uses an old Whites 6000 DI Coinmaster Series 3. Today on a hunt his needle stopped working on top. If he pin points it will move. If he regularly swings over a target and it makes a good solid tone , the needle stays at zero. He put new batteries in and still the same. We threw a coin on the ground. Great signal wouldnt move. Pinpointed and bam it moved. Any idea on a fix? He loves his dinosaur he calls Mr. Whites and was heartbroken to see that happen. He is in his 60s and doesn't like the new ones out today.

If the meter works on pinpoint that pretty well rules out a defective meter. The sound works indicating that circuit to be working. You might open it up and shoot the rotary switches with some good contact cleaner(Home Depot has it) and operate the switches while you spray.Try not to spray the printed circuit board and avoid WD40 and the like.

Some of the older 6000's (not sure about the S3) used a stacked double PCB with interconnect pins. Those pins are notorious for developing contact problems. Open it up and gently wiggle the boards.
