white's 4900 DL ???

Hi y'all! I'm new to the site as well as MDing. I have a 4900 I bought used 20 years ago. This thing is so new it still has the original batteries in it and they work fine. I got it out lately 'cause I am retired and trying to finally find the time to use it.I have a manual but I'm not sure I'm smart enough to use it. Seems there's a lot to learn.

I've had it out a few times but don't really know what I'm doing.searching in geb/norm, and geb disc and learning a bit about both.I'm hoping to talk to someone that knows this machine and has the patients of a saint to help me learn this. I have some nice sites to check that I know noone else has ever been in but I have a lot of learning to do and this hobby can only be fit into an already tight schedule.
Hoping someone will take the time to do a little long distance teaching as I don't know anyone local that has a MD.

Thanks,

Wade

Best thing to do - read the manual. Make sure you ground balance it (it really is not that hard at all). These are the classic 'blue box' White's, (which I adore, BTW) they'll go deep in all metal but don't expect anything earth shattering when it's run in GEB/DISC. 4-5" on a dime. They have to be swept fast in GEB/DISC mode so your wrist and arm are gonna be killin' you pretty quick. I'd go to Home Depot and get 4 #10 ring clips and make yourself a hip-mount. Find a couple adjustable straps with the clip-ends, detach the blue box and wear it over your shoulder. Your arm will thank you. They're a lot of fun, but realistically tech's come a LONG way since then. If it's super clean and all original, you could probably get a good price on Feebay and get yourself something lighter and newer.

Thanks for the reply and info. I think for now at least I'll be staying with this unit. Being new to MDing, even though I have had this for years ,It'll do just fine for now. I don't know if I'll have the time to hunt like I'd want so why invest in another.

I started back up this past year (since my teens) and I use a 4900D Pro Plus left to me by my father. It's done really well for me. I printed out a manual from whites page and practiced a lot with settings. I'm getting more and more confident with it that I prefer it over the Ace 350 I won at a club group seeded hunt (using the 49'r). I'm practicing with that as well but don't care for the bell tones and my whites is better balanced (not front end heavy). My favorite mode for quiet, stable, and quick hunting is in TR Disc after checking ground balance in GEB Norm. Set my disc so it just picks up a nickel and go to town. you don't have to be in motion either to pinpoint which is also quick and easy. If object isn't to big a target I go for it.

Oh yeah, WELCOME fellow 49'r user!:hello2::icon_thumright:

Hey L41. I guess the equipment is a match. I just got my cen-tech in the mail today. Can't wait to get out there and give it a good test run!
So,since I'm new to this I just been using geb/norn or geb/disc.The manual mentions the tr setting but It's too much for me to absorb at one time. Maybe i can try that later.I've just been ground balancing in norm and leaving everything else at the pre-set position. Now that you know your machine I'm wondering just how much more adjusting I'll need to learn how to do before I have it tuned into what it is capable of!
I got the 49r out Sunday and was in a guys yard and he thru down a dime so I was going to show him the dif. in norm-disc.In norm it picked it up and in disc it went silent. I still haven't figured that one out.

Anyway, thanks for the reply. Hope to stay in touch!I could learn a lot from you I'm sure!

The reason it went silent is the disc disced it out.
You have to set the dial to what you want to hear and what you dont want to hear.
Put it on a wooden table or something with no metal around, and practice putting coins, and iron objects under the coil, and see at what settings you can hear, or disc out objects that you dont want to hear.
Quite a few of us have test gardens with different objects in them, in our yards for practice, or to test out new coils and settings.
Welcome to Tnet.

If you have a club near you join it. First go to a few meetings and see what the people are like, and what they use.

Thanks Roadrunner! That makes sense! I'll def. do that asap! Can't wait to get out there again but it's plenty hot and I've got a lot on my plate right now so just have to wait a bit. We are also very dry now so a good rain should give me a chance to use it and help with finding targets also.
Thanks again,

Wade
