I am searching for a cache, gold or silver coins, the container is either a steel can, or a glass jug. I have determined either a Whites or a Discovery 2 box machine is my weapon of choice on this hunt.

On the TM 800 and Discovery 900 there is a "Cave" mode, now in the manual it says that Cave mode will find gold and silver. My question is this, with a steel can, would the gold/silver inside show up as a void and would therefor sound off in Cave mode? In other words, should I hunt for this cache in Cave mode, or regular Metal mode? The thing is, there are a lot of junk iron targets where I hunt, but not voids,...hmm. Your thoughts here:

The TM800 has cave mode but they are hard to find. You may find a TM808 but they do not have cave mode. I have not used the Discovery 900 so I can not comment on it's use. But the TM 808 and the TM 800, I have used both of them. The Cave Mode will not help you find a cache of gold or silver unless it is in a hole or vacuum such as a cave. But then it will not pick up the silver or gold. It will only let you know that a void is there.

Now if your cache in a glass container and none of the coins is touching the lid, then it could show up as a small void on the Cave Mode. If the coins are touching the lid then your signal will between iron and gold or silver depending on whether it is gold or silver.

Your best bet is to search as deep as you can first as that will eliminate small iron objects. Then go down on sensitivity to hunt closer to the surface. you will need to experiment with air test to see how the machine locates at different sensitivity to the size of the cache you are searching for? I hope this helps.

You will not be able to use cave mode to try and find small objects like cans or jars.
The volume is too small to make a noticeable difference with a two box. There is another factor, the cave mode works by actually sounding off on a negative threshold. So if you have a void which has less ground iron (mineral) then it should sound off (if large enough) BUT... the metal contents of your cache would compensate for the lack of mineral in terms of signal. The result would be opposite, the TM 800 would actually go quiet in cave mode instead of sounding off.

Your best bet for small targets like that is a Loop detector with a medium sized loop. If you can afford a two box and a loop detector... that is the way to go.
The Two box is used to detect and mark larger than fist targets, eliminating small stuff. Then you go over those marked sites with a VLF Loop detector to get size, shape and possible make up of the tartet.

In summary, Cave mode is NOT very useful and will be cancelled out if metal is in the void.
